The double discone on that site is a poor attempt at a "bicone" or "biconical dipole" which has much less band width than a discone but can have some gain if designed correctally, which its not. I bought one for testing several years ago and its rotting in my backyard somewhere.

just to play devil's advocate for a moment.....is it any worse? Or are they comparable to one another?

No, but it does oxidize. The layer of aluminum oxide that forms on bare aluminum does a pretty good job of protecting the base metal. However, in a salty environment (sea shore or midwestern winters), aluminum will react with the salt to form compounds that are destructive to the base metal.

The hood on my Ford Expedition is aluminum and there's a spot on the leading edge of the hood where the paint has bubbled. I suspect that some road salt got under the paint through a paint chip and now there's a bit of "rot" going on under the paint.

If a discone is good a double discone must be twice as good, right? Just give me a double chocolate on a sugar cone and I'm happy. Yeah, aluminium doesn't do well in a salt air environment, I have replaced a few antennas that look like they served in a war and lost.
