Have talked to a fire chief in Duplin County tonight. He told me that Duplin is going to sign on with the VIPER system. Grants have been applied for to buy radios. He is the second person to tell me this so must be something to it. Both of the people work for two differnt agencys.

This would be a great thing for them. The county is large and has had a communications problems for years. VIPER has 3 sites in the county, Kenansville, Chinquapin, and Wallace. The chiinquapin ( I know it is not spelled right) and Wallace sites are not up yet but soon will be. A fouth site is going up at kornagay ( cant spell tonight or my fingers are cold lol )

Will tell more as I hear it.

Thanks for the update! I had heard rumors that Duplin was thinking of this decision but this could be a good change for the counties comm setup...Thanks for keeping us posted!

Sampson County will also join the VIPER System soon. As I was told by a Clinton PD Lt. Clinton PD already have the portable radios, and has already applied for a Homeland Security grant for the mobiles. As for the County, they are ordering 80 radios for the Sheriff's Office and radios for the county fire departments. For right now the first out unit(s) at each of the county's 16 fire depts will have a mobile radio. But first, a new tower with a microwave link has to be built at the communications center. Sounds like Duplin and Sampson are moving right along!!!

My info (by word of mouth from some who would know) is that Duplin is officially on the list and is in the "waiting for reply" mode on the "paperwork" (which includes the preliminary financing, preliminary comm plan, preliminary logistics, preliminary preliminaries, yadda yadda), so that would indicate a solid committment on the part of Duplin.

And, yeah, ya did spell Chinquapin right. :)
