I was an engineer with GE during the peak of EF. Most in the office knew of name EF but not much more. Generally one technical individual (District Service Manager) had the need to know and the calls referred to him. EF repeaters were generally at AT&T Long Lines microwave towers. Found out later that many Federal techs carried GE credentials and they had access into the high levels of the company.

Worked on many of the 1/4 KW Master Pros. Always thought the amps were not GE's best effort. Found them finicky-especially the LB amp. Happy when Mastr II SS amps were developed.

Many of the ground station antennas are still on the sites that are left standing (Vertical above two horizontally spaced dipoles as pictured in OP's post). There were many more ground stations than most documentation found online details. This is one of the Miami backup stations taken just last week.

FYI On AT&T Long Line Towers. Did you know before the FCC "outed them" with the ULS & ASR data bases, their location was considered classified? The towers were hiding in plain sight but not officially documented other than on air-charts. The microwave topology was nowhere!

My boss at Minnesota DOT, as we traveled the state , kept track of them in a little book. If I ran across one I was to plot it on the state highway map and provide the azimuths of the dishes. His motive was to try to re-route our leased circuits out of state to get AT&T to quote interstate rates rather than the higher intra-state rates we were paying. Pretty soon he had a draft of a CAD drawing showing the routing of key circuits and requested AT&T that we be provided a quote for re-routing out of state then back into Minnesota.

The AT&T guys just about had the big one over our knowledge which we were told was classified but we substantially cut our inter-office voice and data lease rates. The big secret was the routing of inbound NORAD radar information from the radar strings across North America and the outbound traffic to the northern B-52 bomber bases and the missile silos.

Yeah, a lot of military traffic carried on those.
White Alice system is a similar thing to get into if this interests you. I've only been to two of those sites, back when they were still standing. Those made the Long Lines towers look small.

I do a lot of traveling in the Western US and several times I've detoured when I've seen one of their towers on the horizon. I've been to quite a few of them, even camping at a few. Always interesting.

Had a booming signal here in the NY NJ Metro area back in the day. Caught several QSO’s. Thanks for memories.

E-F listening was a thrill. Geo. H.W Bush, who headed the CIA before his Presidency, seemed very conscious of the insecurity of the system, unlike others. He would say things like " we will go ahead with that thing we discussed previously", to avoid specifics over E-F.

Signals from AF-1 could often be monitored 20 minutes or so on my Pro-2006 at home, and in the field, my peppy Regency HX-1200 scored many times.

In those days, the Exec. and SAM aircraft operations were often on HF Mil Aero frequencies , as well.

This has been a great read, thanks to all.

Here's a map I made of the network. Enjoy!

Rainbow was the USSS callsign for Nancy Reagan. However, it was also used for the Queen's helicopter.

Crayon control was a sub codename for the CIA's MKUltra mind control program where subjects were given different types of drugs to determine their reactions.
