From the Owner's Manual and various posts, it seems that one can program AFS "Wildcard" Talkgroups. How do you do that, and could I use this feature to lock out a number of TGIDs, ie. create a Group, program AFS TGIDs as a widcard and then lock out.

Thanks, Mike

I was going to do that the other day, but ended up not having to, since I reduced the number of TGIDs to less than 200. But, my best guess is that you would enter only a partial AFS number. If that doesn't work, then I'd try entering * for the missing numbers at the end. Please let us know how it's done when you figure it out.

Theres a wildcard for ICALL but that doesn't include TGID's it's by radio ID. If all you want is to defeat the 200 limit then just keep that system in SEARCH mode and L/O any unwanted TGID's......

Page 27/28 of the manual indicates that you can enter wildcard ID's that identify all units within an agency or fleet.

"your BCD396T lets you assign wildcard ID’s
that let you, for example, use only one ID memory to
identify all units in either an agency or a fleet."

YES. It works. I just did it. It works on 'scan' or 'search'.
Here's my examples:
BeltonPD 02-08 /02-08
BeltonFire 04-08 /04-08
K PD 02-04 /02-04
K Fire 04-04 /04-04
Temple PD 02-02 /02-02
TempleFire 04-02 /04-02
Unk PD 02 /02
Unknwn 03 Area /03
Unknown 03-14 /03-14
Unknown 03-146 /03-146
Unk Fire 04 /04
(note- "/" is only for clarity here to separate description from actual AFS entered.)

It apparently searches from 'most specific' to 'least specific', because I saw both
Unknown 03-14 03-14 and
Unknown 03-146 03-146
come up on the display.

I never saw an unknown 'agency' come up, but nearly all activity is in the 02, 04, and 08 Fleets(towns) of the Agencies I used.

I've been dealing with Uniden scanners for years and have both a BC246T and BR330T - both of which allow wildcards to be used, but I've never used the wildcard functionality. I'd love to implement it in my programming! Let me see if I understand this correctly.

Lets say I have 3 specific talkgroups programmed for Agency X.

01-011 Agency X Dispatch
01-012 Agency X Tac 1
01-013 Agency X Tac 2
01-01 Agency X Unknown

If I program wildcards for 01-01 , will the scanner correctly identify the ones that I specified, but catch anything else under the "Unknown" ?

There are a large number of talkgroups that my local agencies use but I have no real need to specifically program each and every talkgroup, but would be nice to at least identify what agency they are via alpha tags without using the "Search" function. Plus I can lock out the "unknown" talkgroup unless I need it!

Thanks!

Yes, as I mentioned earlier, it searches from "most specific" to "least specific". And, as far as I can determine, you may NOT use just an Agency; you must code the Agency-Fleet, as in your example, not mine. However, the quote from the post above indicates that you may use only Agency, so maybe I just didn't listen long enough with the right things entered.

Perhaps if I had entered "02-" instead of just "02", then it may have worked for just an agency.
