• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

EF Johnson announced the VP8000 all band radio last week. Here's what I know off the top of my head:
  • VHF/UHF/7-800 MHz capabilities
  • WiFi capable
  • Bluetooth capable
  • FIPS 140-3 certified
  • Multi-protocol (not just talking analog and P25) support
  • Base price is rumored to be in the same ballpark as a base APX6000
  • Kenwood manufactured but an EF Johnson exclusive product (with Viking firmware)
At the price point they are aiming for, this should be a very competitive product especially for those coming off of Viking deployments using VM/VP subscribers as the Vault perpetual entitlement program will allow for entitlement licenses to be removed from old radios and applied to new radios.

PLEASE DON'T put this on a KPG-xx platform, this is a technical abortion on the level of CPS 2 for TRBO.

YES!

Here, for good measure, just to make sure we get the point across:

I'm dying to know if this will continue to be an Armada supported product/firmware. Adding DMR/NXDN means a new Armada version, firmware and all. PLEASE DON'T put this on a KPG-xx platform, this is a technical abortion on the level of CPS 2 for TRBO.

If EFWood has any business sense whatsoever, the 8000 will use the Armada ecosystem. For what it's worth, I've heard rumblings of DMR firmware coming out for earlier Viking units.

I should probably mention, EF Johnson has very little control regarding the firmware used in NX series radios. What EFJ does have full control over is the Viking firmware stack in the Viking radios. Viking firmware works with Armada...plain and simple.

Good Morning. has anyone had a chance to do any programming of the VP8000 via WiFi or have any documentation about it. Just starting to dive into this and wanted to check here first. Thanks

My understanding is that is not a currently supported feature on the VP8000. I think it is planned for a future release along with DMR Tier II functionality.

Is there detailed instructions on how to do it for those of us who aren’t IT nerds?

The Armada help file is inconsistent on that. If you search for WiFi, it leads to a page that includes: "... you can program your Viking mobile radios wirelessly" and "Only Viking mobile radios support Wi-Fi. To connect a Viking mobile radio to your Wi-Fi network, you must purchase a supported Wi-Fi dongle." However, further down the page, under "To Program Wi-Fi", item 3 refers to VP8000. Haven't tried to use it yet, but it does let you add WiFi networks when editing a VP8000 template as described.

The VP8000, if enabled via entitlement works with WiFi programming, we have four of them working live now. Simple setup the WiFi section to connect to your WiFi, configure the Armada Proxy and server application, that’s it. The radio will automatically show up in Armada read to be programmed. Bluetooth programm is also an option if the entitlements are purchase.

My dealer told me that they have the radios but they keys aren't available yet in their Vault. Is it just them or is this a nationwide thing?

The Vault does not yet support the VP8000; that’s the hold up.
