Sacramento, Placer & El Dorado Crime Rates Rise

A lot of people think that. I spend a lot of time in southern California, and it seems to be more sane than the Sacramento area these days.

(AP) SACRAMENTO Violent crime increased in Sacramento, Placer and El Dorado counties last year.

The California Department of Justice statistics show Sacramento County's violent crime rate was higher than nearly all the state's 10 largest cities.

Even with the increases in more rural Placer and El Dorado counties, their numbers still remain relatively low.

What a terrific list, thanks!

Audio Recordings

For those that missed it, I have the first in a series of recordings. Each is 10 minutes long.
I edited out a lot of the code 33 beepers, the "10-4"s and such along with most of the silence, so it covers probably in excess of 25-30 minutes of real time. This is streaming audio, no need to download the whole file to play it.

This starts right after the major gun battle and includes H24 saying that he'll enter the hot zone to pick up the deputies.

H24 finds the suspect. Lots of tactical.

H24 has radio problems, but maintains a visual. SWAT rolls in...and the end. This one is a bit longer.

"Late Tuesday, the three wounded deputies were recovering in a Roseville trauma center and the injured K-9 -- 6-year-old Donder, a Belgian Tervuren -- also was expected to survive.

Authorities identified the wounded deputies as 18-year veteran Jon Yaws; 16-year veteran Greg Murphy, and 5-year veteran Melissa Meekma. "

Well, I hope that these deputies are okay. I know two of them, one of those is a good family friend (and was also first on scene).

I did not know the dog; but I'm pulling for him too!

Well, the female, Meekma, is the family friend. I'm suprised they released those names so quickly!

I'm glad all are doing well, and I hope all do well. ALL of them are well known in this community for outstanding work, and I hope they will return ASAP to their duty of serving our community. In the meantime, their abscence will be felt!

Get Well Melissa!

As soon as I heard H-24 say they were picking up the injured deputies I took off for Sutter Roseville. I was at I-80 and Madison when I started for SRMC and H-24 beet me to the hospital so they must have been "flying". I was able to get video of H-24 taking off back in route to the scene and shortly after REACH landed with deputy Meekma and I got video of her being off loaded from the chopper. I will do some editing on the video later today and post a clip.

I understand that a bullet had penetrated the stitching on Meekma's vest. How often does that happen?!? Apperently all three deputies were shot from a couple of bunkered locations that the shooter built on his property. Good thing he's gone and none of the deputies are.

There are no stitches on the ballistic panels of normal, concealable body armor.

What may have happened is it went between the panels, typically if shot from the side. Otherwise, there's a typo or some miscommunication.

I was at the Placerville Speedway tonight for the Mark Forni Memorial race and got to see Donder, Jon Yaws and Melissa Meekma, they were honored during the opening ceremonies. They all looked very good for being shot just over a month ago.

Yep, saw that this morning. Very sad. I read that she took a medical retirement last year. Makes me wonder if she would still be here if she stayed on the job and not removed herself from a support group that truly understood how she felt.

This is a line of duty death… the only difference between this one and the others I have seen recently is that this one could have been prevented with ease… A young life wasted… may her service to our community never be forgotten

Does anybody have the full recording to this incident? The ones already posted no longer work.

I don't have the FULL recording, I started right after the initial gunfight (a little too petrified because I had a close friend getting shot). I will see if I even still have them and post them somewhere for you.

***Update - Had to dig deep, but I found them.

Oh I can't thank you enough. I've been looking for the recording ever since this incident occurred. I am an EDSO explorer and I've been told about this shooting by one of my advisers who was in the incident. Also, my dad used to work with one of the deputies who was there that day. Again, many thanks.
