I am very new to scanners. I have heard that some police channels are encrypted and I will not be able to listen to them. How can I tell if a channel is encrypted. I am looking at State of Ohio Mahoning County Youngstown Police. I was told that is was encrypted.

Hello & welcome to RR! If these are the channels you are monitoring, they are listed as analog FM on the RRDB:
158.73000 156.03000 KNBJ654 RM210.7 PLYPD 1Youngstown PD Ch. 1 FM Law Dispatch
158.79000 155.19000 KNBJ651 RM173.8 PLYPD 2Youngstown PD Ch. 2 FM Law Tac
If they were encrypted they'd most likely be listed as such in plain text next to the channel description or if you are monitoring a trunked radio system the letters "DE" would appear under the "Mode" field of the talkgroup to indicate "Digital Encrypted". Hope this helps

In the Youngstown Talkgroup section listed under the Austintown / Boardman Joint Public Safety P25 system, the police talkgroups are listed as "DE" which indicates "Encryption"
Ok thanks for the info. I did not look in talk groups cause I am not sure on how to set it up until I get my newer scanner.
Boardman,Poland,YPD,Canfield,Jackson/Milton/Craig Beach,Campbell,Struthers PD’s & Sheriff are all DE.
Very rarely you might get one or two transmissions a week by accident.
Austintown is the only one open.
