I want to replace my brand new BC 346XT with a digital & encrypted capable scanner. I thought I was knowledgeable based on my SC 200 experience, but the BC 346XT proved that I am way out in left field and don't have a clue!!

I am leaning towards either the Unden BCD 396XT, BCD 996XT or the HomePatrol, any comments would be greatly appreciated!! I would also appreciate any other scanner suggestions.

Thanks.

Hi Joe516,

Your choices all receive digital transmissions so you're on the right track with any one of those.

I too am a Uniden fan.

And as Dan said in his post, there are no scanners for monitoring encypted comms.

I don't have a HP-1 but I know that it uses the RR database, so that saves you time with putting in the systems in your area.

Aw heck, get all three and live it up! LOL

Digital scanner

If ou will be monitoring simulcast transmissions, I would check the reviews. My PSR 800 handles my local system very well, but some systems and scanners are almost impossible to monitor.

I have sent a firmware request to UPMAN for the 996XT to decode AES and ADP encryption on the next release. Fingers crossed!!

I'll post what I just posted in your other thread, just to make sure you're clear about all of this:

No scanner can monitor encrypted transmissions. That's the whole point of encryption, so no one except authorized users can listen.

Before you go spending good money on a digital scanner, there are two very important things you need to understand:

1 - As already stated, no scanner can monitor encryption.

2 - Nearly every talkgroup on the Nassau County PD P25 digital system is encrypted.

Translation: If you're thinking of spending $400+ on a digital scanner just to listen to the Nassau County PD system, forget about it. You won't hear much, if anything.

Ain't gonna happen. It is illegal to intercept encyrpted comms. Period.

I thought firmware request was a joke... At least I hope it was. Poor Paul.

To keep on topic, for those of you that preach the word of GRE, the latest XT firmware has provided a much better decode rate on simulcast systems. Although it doesn't (and never will) decode encryption ;)

Better? Yes. As good as GRE? Nope, not on the system I listen to.

What part of this site do you scanner hypes fail to read? The request to decode encryption with a scanner just seems to keep coming up constantly. The same answer is given all the time. Maybe we should just stop putting comments here to all for those that seem to think there is a way around the issues about the technical problems and legal problems.

Bottom line is stop asking and do a search before going any further on this topic.

Monitoring encrypted systems

Sorry if my answer was a little muddled. I should have made it clear that if the systems you want to listen to use simulcast, the scanner and location can make the difference between listening and garbled noise that sounds like encryption. For the system I monitor, the 800 does a good job, but my older digital scanner can't separate the simulcast signals in most locations.

It was a joke. I am sick and tired if people asking if there is a scanner that will decode Provoice, Opensky, Mototrbo, NXDN and encryption. Use the search feature of this site and you will soon find out that NONE OF THESE EXIST!!!

Well, there is software out there to listen to ProVoice, MotoTRBO and NXDN but it isn't built into any scanner as is. Encryption though? Forget it. Never going to happen - even if it did, it would be illegal anyway.

The only way to listen to encrypted frequencies is to actually work for the agency your trying to listen to, lol. Other than that your SOL.

The words digital and encrypted are mutually exclusive when describing a scanner.
It isn't going to happen....ever!
