Hello,

Can one assume that if there is encryption, e.g., a P.D., you will "always" hear some noise ?

When would this be true, or untrue ? Audio settings, etc. ?

Audio settings on newer Whistler scanners, UNIDEN scanners I believe just have silence, skip over them.

Hi Bob:
It depends on the receiver. Some emit garbling which sounds like R2D2. As mentioned above me, Unidens will silence the audio while displaying ENC or ENCRY on the screen. Whistlers make a busy signal type noise

At some point, the type of encryption may be a factor. Locally there is a lot of ADP. On some ancient (396) scanners it would be a buzzing kind of sound and not silence or move on.
