EVX539 receiver audio

I have an EVX539 which I utilize for digital as well as analog communications. The receiver audio in the digital mode is fine, couldn't ask for better audio, BUT the analog audio is rough, fuzzy, not clear at all. I've played with different programming for analog, but the radio almost sounds like it has a cracked speaker, except it's perfect when used digital. Has anyone else noticed "rough" audio on analog, any suggestions on how to clean it up? No comparison to my HT1250 for analog communications!

Program in your local National Weather Service Channel on VHF. Do you still get the same analog distortion? Just a guess, but if you have clean audio, then you may have bad narrow-band ceramic filter, while your wide band filter is OK. Though I would suppose if the narrow band filter were bad you would get distortion on digital as well, unless a different ceramic filter is used for digital. Sorry, but I'm not familiar with the EVX539.to be of much help.

It's a UHF only radio, and it doesn't seem to make a difference if I'm listening to a narrow band public safety signal or a wide band analog ham repeater, the analog audio is the worse that I've experienced, and I have owned enough portables.

Yes, analog audio is terrible. I haven't found a way around this either. Digital sounds fantastic! I don't know why analog is so bad. My other Vertex analog radios have excellent audio. If you find a way to make it better, please post the answer here.

I'm glad I posted on my problem, I thought I might have a lemon, but now I know that I'm not alone. I'm going to send an e-mail to Vertex with my complaint, and if I get an answer I will post it here. Thanks to those who responded.

EVX539 receiver audio changes

I made some adjustments to my portable, and noticed a slight improvement in the recovered analog audio, here is what I did: I downloaded & installed firmware ver. 4.20 (nothing described in the update for audio), I also went into the channel programming and made some changes. Go to an analog channel and click CH INFO, this will open up another window, I enabled Compander and changed the RX HPF to UP, RX SPL to LOW and enabled EQUALIZER. I set up 2 channels side by side, one with the default settings and the next with the changes. While listening I switched back and forth to see if there was any improvement. On MY radio I felt there a was a slight improvement in audio quality with the changes, nothing earth shattering but some improvement. My analog audio is still not as clear as the digital audio, but I feel I made a slight improvement. If anyone else makes these changes in programming I would like to hear your thoughts.

I tried your suggestion. Not any better on the audio. You got me thinking about trial and error with this radio again. The only thing I found over the weekend that made the audio better was turning off Pre-Emphasis. However, that results in very tinny audio.
