ext floppy drive win 8 help.

Ok I got a Yaesu ft-8500 radio and needed the software to program it. A ham elected to help me save money by giving me his original Programming Software that came on a floppy drive.

So I purchased a usb external floppy drive to read the disk and use the program. It's a plug and play device.

When I plug in the floppy drive the pc recognizes it on drive A via usb. When inserting the Yaesu programming floppy disk it says ...." This app can't run on your pc. To find a version check with the publisher software" ......

Is there a work around to get my Windows 8 to recognize this floppy disk program ?

Do I need to try and find a older pc with a older OS and internal floppy?

There is a newer software version and cable to program this radio. I have bought the external drive and cable and after many attempts cant get it to work. Since I have spent money on these items I would like to see if it will work. If not I will have to purchase the new version and spend another 50 bucks.

You might try "Compatibility" tab on "Properties" for the program. I am running 7 so not sure what 8 has to offer.

Not familiar with that radio, but R. T. Systems has programming software and cables for a lot of radios. Try them out.

I have looked for drivers for this external floppy drive and found none. It's plug and play and may be why I cant find them. Also I tried the compatibility and no success. I do know that RT systems has the up to date software for this radio but I have already purchased a external drive and cable adapter and was wondering if anyone has ran into this sort of issue. If I can resolve this conflict then I don't have to spend more money to get the newer version programming. That is the last result.

I will try and see if I can find another floppy to see if that will load. If the other floppy's load then there may be something wrong with this one but I doubt it.

Will it let you copy the software from the floppy to a folder on your PC and run it from that folder?

Floppy is old. Possibly a 16 bit app? If you're running x64 windows that's a no go.

Yep, what NYG said - other possible issues could be: Attempting to install 64bit code on a 32Bit OS, or a corrupted installer. If it's old software I doubt is 64Bit code. If the file can be copied to your hard drive, then you can probably rule out file corruption.

I found while reading that Win 8 comes with 16 bit application support but the only option for it is in the 32bit version win 8. So I I have a extra hard drive and also got both 32 and 64 bit versions of windows 8 pro when I bought it back several years ago. So I will let you know if it will work.

If this is the case and works then it has to be better than running a 16-bit code under 32 bit emulation under a 64- bit OS under virtual PC. So here goes.......be back shorty..........

Now how would I take this program and make a copy to a cd/dvd and make it work on the 64 bit version of window? Anyone?

You might be able to use a DOS emulator to get things work. Like DosBox or DOSemu. I have no idea but it may be a start.

It will be quicker to transfer your software from 1.44 Floppy to USB flash drive (using older OS or computer) and run program in Win 8 from USB? But now, you may heve to run Program in "compatibility mode" if will run at all ???

64 bit OS will not run a 16-bit in ANY compatibility mode.

he would NEED a 32bit OS in a VM or a DOS emulator to run it properly.

16-bit mode applications are not possible in ANY 64-bit OS windows wise. i cannot comment on MAC or Linux in x64.

but for windows, forget about it.

you MUST get XP Mode, if you have the right version of 8, a stand alone VM emulator, or DOS Emulator to even BEGIN trying.
