I noticed no activity on Fairfax county PD yesterday and this morning. I reprogrammed from the RR database, but still nothing.

The old system is no longer used apparently. No active control channel.

They're on the P25 System Now

The reception is horrible, too. On the old system, I received everything crystal clear both inside and outside of my house but on the new system, I get about 75% of it okay outside but only 50% or less of it indoors. It's pretty bad.

The P25 frequencies are up to date...it's just the reception that's the issue. And it's the same problem with the fire/ems channels, too. :(

I think everything has switched over to Project 25 and if you program those frequencies in, then you should start hearing the PD again. I am not in Fairfax to verify this however it is streaming on the RR site (but you probably know all of that by now). I have been running both for a while now and the reception has been very good in the Mt Vernon area on Project 25 but give it some time. They may need to make some adjustments.

Everything sounds fine here, near Mount Vernon

And you're monitoring FCPD on the P25 system? I'm using a PSR-800 with an Austin Condor antenna and it's pretty choppy indoors. Outdoors is better but not nearly as good as the old system.

What are you scanning with if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks!

Those of you that are having reception issues should try maybe a Radio Shack 800MHz antenna or maybe a cheap multiband cell phone mag mount and see if either of those help.

You're not the only one having issues. I'm currently in Reston, and I haven't been picking up anything for the past couple of days. Oddly enough, last week I had a day where I didn't hear anything as well (Despite an ambulance being next door at my neighbor's house), but suddenly last Saturday (09-22-12), the chatter was coming across nice and strong as usual. This is the first time I've really ever had a period of silence this long before. I even took my Pro-106 driving around the area with me the last two nights, but I still experienced nothing short of absolute silence. I noticed one bar on the signal meter while parked next to a fire station, as well as periodic, evenly spread out full signal bar bursts (Sans sound), but that is it.

FYI- I did reload the pre-loaded folder recently, since I loaded others into it while traveling, but all the settings appear as they did before, and this past Saturday's experience would seen to confirm that I haven't changed anything that would suddenly cause it to cease functioning properly from my end.

Fairfax County listeners try this. Only use the P25 system, and add 857.2625 and 860.2625 to the control channels. That should solve your reception problems.

Yep, I'm pretty sure last Sunday or Monday they completed moved over all of the PD channels to the P25 system. That's when the old channels went silent anyway. The Fire/EMS channels got moved about 3 months ago.

I'm in Springfield (southern Fairfax County) and the reception in my car is fairly good but not as good as the old system. Indoors it's still struggling a bit...and I'm using a PSR-800 with an Austin Condor 800 Mhz antenna.

Hopefully, over time, things will improve...

I've got all of the P25 channels loaded on my PSR-800 but I don't know how to add those two frequencies you listed. I'll hit the user's manual, however, to try and figure it out.

Thanks for the tip!!

In the EZ Scan software, go to trunked systems, select this one at the top (guessing you already have it loaded) , select the site on the lower left, then under the freq tab, add the freqs to the list. The update your microSD card.

Fairfax P25

The active control channel is 856.2625. This has not changed for months. The old system CC (860.2625)has been moved to the P25 as a VDP channel per Pro96Com. They now are using 24 frequencies on the new system. I will submit the list to RRDB as it shows in Pro96Com.

I tried to submit the list but the submit page would not take it.

Looks like there is a trend for large county wide systems currently used in Loudoun and Fairfax counties to convert to P25 systems to take advantage of embedded signalling. Eventually the whole fleet of radios will be reprogrammed to operate in the P25 mode. Because of this my old Radio Shack Pro 96 is dying a slow death and gives me a good excuse to buy a newer model. Leaning towards the Bearcat radios because I have actually heard how well they receive.

I live in Fairfax County 6 months of the year, correct me if I am wrong but it appears the talk group ID's have remained the same. Also notice that some of the talk group IDs that use to appear in RR data base are now missing. Have to assume Fairfax requested the deletion of those ID's.

Please let me know your thoughts on the Bearcat radios that seemingly pick up P25 signals well enough to monitor.

Motorola Smartnet and Smartzone systems are at or near end of life in support. With no technical or parts support, many jurisdictions are forced to buy P25 as that is the only trunking format available that is compatible to our subscriber equipment.

Many talkgroups were re-organized due to two systems running together and being interfaced by Motorola's Smart X. As of last Monday, 522B has been pulled off the air and is retired.

Not sure what your seeing, but Fairfax has not added any more frequencies to it's 03C9 system. It's still the same re-banded 20 with the last 5 being moved.

I don't have any experience with the Uniden Bearcat scanners, but just keep in mind that if you want to monitor Loudoun, the GRE PSR-800 is currently the only scanner that will decode their P25 - X2 transmissions.

Did you open the PDF screenshot of Pro96Com ?? I am decoding 856.2625(CC) at 90-102% consistantly. Can the decode software be reporting inaccurate freqs.? I suppose anything is possible.
I know the first and last freq. in the list are bogus. Dont know where they came from. I have done a reload after deleting all saved data and it comes back the same.
