Amateur related since the user was a ham licensee that should have known better.

Or, why you should think twice about buying radios that will transmit outside the services in which you are licensed.

Or, don't accidentally activate audio relay function on a public safety frequency.

or, as always, make sure you are not transmitting where you are not licensed, no matter the reason:

Do amateur stuff on (unmodified) amateur radios <-- practically foolproof.
If you're not authorized to transmit on something, then simply don't create the ability.
Accidents happen. I've picked up the wrong microphone on more than one occasion, and while it's a bit embarrassing to have to *properly* ID on the channel that I used, it's not a big deal because, well, I *can* properly ID.

As a ham for more than 50 years, and having worked in the RF field for more than 40, I have seen that it's easier to purchase equipment that can be misused now than it ever was before. Couple that with those who don't care or don't understand rules (or don't RTFM), and there's bound to be problems.

Far too many people purchase garbage communications equipment, while denying they’ve intentionally stepped in dog poop right out of the gate. Ok, so you can’t afford a top end radio (or at the very least, one of acceptable quality) so why not simply wait, while squirreling away cash for a better radio that’s more likely to remain operational three weeks after you’ve acquired it? After all, the most effective way of killing off a business that produces garbage is by not giving them the legitimacy they never deserved to have bestowed upon them from the very beginning!

Just had a conversation with "one of those" the other day....wasn't even a ham, some guys on .520 without licenses...wasn't even an actual emergency.

That all depends on what definition of emergency you use.

"Immediate threat to life or limb"

or

"I am inconvenienced at the moment"

Or I wanna talk to my buddy in the other jeep... there was not by any stretch of the imagination, something remotely emergency about their coms. Actually a newer ham I've helped off and on called me and told me about it and when I got on the ratio I couldn't believe it. Sounded just like CH19 on a Friday night at the truck stop near E St. Louis.

Is 470.4375 MHz one of those default frequencies in Btech or other CCR's? Reason I ask is that in another group Chicago CARMA, there are reports of key ups on that same frequency with a specific PL.

Well, here's my definition of "emergency" -
- Is anyone actively dying?
- Is anyone leaking profusely?

(I told the boys, when I got a cell phone again, that before you call me, apply those two tests before calling me. And if it is not a proper emergency when you call it, it will be when I get there. . .)

I like to think that this is a reasonable test for whether or not something qualified as an emergency. "If you're going to call me, you better have already called 911. I got the phone for my convenience, not yours."

A video demonstration of this Audio Relay feature. Apparently, if you have both Audio Relay and Dual Watch enabled, what the radio hears on either channel that the radio is listening to is parroted on one channel.
