• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

ok here’s my dumb question for the day…..!! Is Feature 37 multi key.? And if you have this enabled on feature list does it require an internal chip or is it built in?

Thanks

Yes, 37 is multikey. It is built into the code however you do have to have the software code module loaded for it to work otherwise it will show AES: NONE regardless of whether or not you have 37.

It’s a .ess file that enables encrypted operation. Separate file for AES and DES.

Keys obviously would have to be loaded with either Harris Key Admin software or a Motorola KVL.

Look in your radio’s revision menu and it should list the AES/DES version if loaded.

If not where can I get the files.? Or is that a harris only deal?
As @prcguy stated you generate your keys and then load them in via Harris Key Admin which is software you acquire from a Harris dealer or you load the keys in via a KVL, but you place the radio into key load mode when you use a KVL. I primarily use Key Admin for any keys I load into radios, but you basically generate the key you want using either one of those methods and then dump them into the radio.

I didn’t say that, I was talking about loading in the .ess files that are part of the “encryption engine” and if those files don't exist the radio will not be able to do the related encryption. Loading an encryption key via key admin or a KVL is a separate task.

No I misread OP's question I understand .ess, but I thought the reference was just in how to load keys so I apologize for that @prcguy yes @LowderK you'll need to contact your harris dealer, you send them your .fss and they'll send you a new .ess and then you load it into the radio which in turn will allow you to load keys there after with either Key Admin or KVL. But you do need to make sure that you verify AES or DES because they are separate files that you would have to load.

If you have feature 37 active in your radio, from there you use key administrator tools to create your keys, then use a key-load cable to set the keys in the radio.

Think of the .ess files as modules that plug in to the radios firmware. You can have options 14 and 37 enabled, but DES and AES still won't work without those files. If you need them there are lots of us around that can send them over to you.
