I just read a news article that on Wednesday (04/25/07, http://www.journal-news.net/news/articles.asp?articleID=8818) there were 3 people arrested by Berkeley Co. Sheriff's Dept, Charles Town PD, BATF, and U.S. Marshal's. I went back and had recorded traffic on the below:

170.0250 FBI P25 Enc
167.1625 BATF TAC1 (very broken, signal strength unknown, sounded to be P25)
418.2650 DEA 1 P25 Enc

anyone else monitoring these in Berkeley Co area? in the news article they mention a female that was arrested. on 167.1625 I heard "female" in one transmission but the rest was unintelligible.

I sometimes wonder: if federal repeaters are so weak, how do they even hear them? Here in OKC I can hardly hear their repeaters on a handheld, so I question how well they would be able to as well. Guess they are limited to their mobile radios and then cellphones for portable use.

I've thought that before too. there are some sites around here that are far from weak. I can sometimes get the DC area here so I would not be surprised if they were coming from there.

Here's one to give a listen. 138.3 FM no PL
It sounds like some sort of voice mail. Sometimes there are tones and then someone leaves a message. Other times just tones. Several messages over the last few minutes.

418.6250MHz P25 Enc

been hearing P25 encrypted traffic on 418.6250MHz. I have it as DEA 1, but I guess it could be anything. most traffic is encrypted but have been hearing in-the-clear traffic which mostly consists of a female saying "testing". I'm receiving this full signal strength in southern Berkeley County.

This is usually the repeater out for the Customs primary system. Often you can catch their air ships id as Omaha in the clear.

I have that one as customs but I was asking for 169.2350MHz

163.1000MHz Analog

I have this listed as D7 FBI. I know it's used by USGS on Leetown Road in Jefferson County, but this morning I heard analog traffic on it in Berkeley County. there was one unit calling others. it was early, around 4:40am. I remember hearing something about a helicopter on it. a few mins later I heard a helicopter very close to our house. no, I'm not watching for black choppers coming over the hill. :) anyone else up at this hour hear this?

'169.235' is 169.2375

The feds use 12.5 KHz channels. Your scanner apparently doesn't, in that band, and 'rounds off' to the nearest 5 KHz channel. That works fine for receive, but you should remember when writing down lists of frequencies that it's not the correct channel.

You may also find the feds or others using the even tighter 6.25 KHz splits (half of 12.5), which produces even odder looking entries, like 169.24375 (Which your scanner will display as either 169.240 or 169.245)
