We have a Marine VHF radio set up to stream local marine traffic. It is a Standard VHF radio scanning the marine band.
Every few minutes we get some type of loud interference.

Can anyone identify and suggest a method to eliminate it?

We though it might be paging so we install a filter but it didn't help.

Is it coming through the scanner/receiver speaker or just through the computer interface? It almost sounds like someone has set a cell phone near the interface and the occasional cell phone data transmissions are getting into the audio input to the computer. You hear just about the same thing in recording studios and radio/tv broadcast when someone sets a cell phone to close to an audio console.

Otherwise it could be some strong nearby paging although I've not heard that specific sound on a paging channel.

I just listened and I heard at least two different sounds:
-sound like pager tones
-sound like MotoTrbo

What kind of filter are you using, and where exactly is it located within the antenna system?

While digital isn't necessarily legal on Marine VHF, I wouldn't rule out someone doing it....
The paging system filters block out certain frequencies. It won't address stuff being transmitted outside the capacity of the filter.

are you scanning the digital channels and/or the old duplex marine operator channels?

you will find digital modes on a few of the marine vhf channels.

Yeah, that.

What channels are you getting this interference on? If it's not on the commonly used marine channels, like 16, 13, 68, etc, maybe you can just lock out the problem channels. You should probably do that anyway, lock out all the channels except the few that are of interest to you. It will speed up your scan cycle.
