Finding Talk Groups

I have a Radio Shack Pro-96 and will this radio find and display the talk group code once a transmission is heard or where and how do you get the code gor the different talk groups. Just wondering.

Well, assuming it is programmed correctly, and you are listening in open mode, it will properly display the TG information. As to what they are, well, search the site here for the system, if it is here, we probably have some of the them listed. The information comes for the users like you, so if you find something new, submit it.

How come it is when I just have it in manual mode on summit's alternate control channel 157.3125, I hear highway patrol and Milbank PD and their talk group id does not come up, and when I have it in scan mode with the bank open I do not hear Milbank Police Dept, I am trying to get them zeroed in but am having troubles. The talk group ids that are here http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=TRSDB&sid=2315 is not the correct ones, because I hear nothing from them. Just wondering if anyone else is having problems or if anyone has the correct ones. Appreciate any input.

Since only P25 modulation is used on the SD TRS, no sub-audible data is available, so you will never see a TG ID displayed if you monitor in manual mode. As to why it doesn't work in scan mode, it sounds as if you don't have it programmed correctly.

The TG ID's for the NE part of SD are correct, we are less certain about some of the others, but believe me that the ones posted for Grant Co. are correct. Take a look at my location. Understand that 90% of all monitoring I do on this system is off of the Summit tower.

As to your programming, have you used Don Star's Win96 program to program your scanner? If you did, did you make sure you put the 3 sets of BASE/OFFSET/SPACE values in correctly? You cannot program the Pro-96 by hand to monitor this system, and you cannot use the ScanCatLite program (the one that RS uses) to do it either as the program does not work properly with the Pro-96/2096.

PRO-96 tip. To find new talk groups: PGM the controller and alt if it has one, and any other tower on the system you can hear. Enter all known talk groups. Enter just the ID not the Text. NOW lock then all out, except for maybe one or two you would like to hear. Run in open mode [+]. If any new ID's pop up on the system you'll getem. I use my bank -0- for this function. Thanks for the replies, I am using the Win96 and the file you (lou maag) have on yahoo groups, just haven't yet seen that talk group pop up, but will just have to wait and play with it some more,; really liking this digital scanner just want to get to know more about it, still really new to it all.

Since you are using that file I posted, make sure that you have it in open mode or you have placed the lists 1-4 as active. I am pretty sure that I had only list 0 active so that I would only hear the HP and Roberts Co. stuff if I put the radio in closed mode.

Which specific TG or TG's are you not hearing that you expect to hear?

In the file that you have posted you have has bank 0 is Medical Channels, bank 1 is State TRS west and Bank 2 is State TRS East and all banks were in the closed mode. But I have it in open mode. I haven't heard from either 17440 or 17456 which is the talk groups listed for Milbank PD 1 & 2. But I have heard Grant County Law a time or two.
Enjoyed following the storm last night with the NWS and counties talking back and forth.

Milbank PD does not use the Milbank PD assigned channels normally. All Law Enforcement dispatching is done on Grant Co. Law 1 (17392). The EMS & Fire are dispatched on the conventional channel (158.7750) but will occasionally operate on the SD TRS.

In the past year plus that I have been running trunker on the Summit Tower, I have under 100 total hits on either of the Milbank PD TG's. Just listen on the Grant Co Law 1 channel for Milbank units (29-2?) and you will hear what is happening in town.

What file is this? I went to the PRO96 egroup but couldn't find one for SD. Maybe I just missed it.
If anyone would be kind enough to point me the way I would appreciate it.
I will be travelling to the Sioux City Iowa area soon and would like to try to pick up some of the digital SD system.


EDIT.... I just saw in another post it's in the ScanSD group. I just joined that but am waiting for acceptance. Could anyone email it to me?
