Don't forget the Weather Alert app I suggested a few posts back.

I did look. IOS only, I'm afraid. The main reason I want to get this working is around here there are some pretty big holes in cell coverage and the nearest decent shopping/medical places are 35 miles south with the Lewiston Grade at the end and we will be making several trips up to Spokane WA for medical treatments and that's about 100 miles. If something weather wise comes up (right now we've got weather alerts for snow. Rain and flooding) while we're in a hole, I'd like the backup. It's also not unheard of for local cell service to go down. I am starting to think this may be a gateway drug into Amateur radio as well. I ran about 20 feet of speaker wire across the ceiling and reception increased immensely.
Scotty.

Getting an amateur radio license costs next to nothing. You surely have ham radio clubs in your area. Goto The ARRL and search for a club near you. Betcha at least one in your area will occasionally host free classes. The cost to take the exam is <$10. There is a ton of used equipment on the market. You could very likely get a nice, used, dual-band (VHF/UHF) monile radio, power supply, antenna and coax for less than you might think.
AS well as the $35.00 license fee for the FCC now.

I always expect to pay whenever I try to access any government service these days. I don't mind the drives so much. About 90 miles or so for the 2 nearest clubs. But that will let us hit one of our favorite restaurants in the state, lol. Any suggestions for sites for shopping for good basic gear? It's probably going to be 4 or 5 months, at least, before we look at buying if we do decide to dive further into the radio well. There is a lot to learn about what to buy.

I did find a well reviewed Wx app for android.

Seems to give me everything I want.

I noticed that you are using a mobile antenna, which is most likely a whip antenna. That means it should have a ground plane below it, like when on the roof of your car. (Unless it is a half wavelength antenna, or other design that doesn't require the ground plane. Many of those have "NGP" somewhere in their name or model number.)

If you are going to put an antenna at the top of your flagpole, it should be one of the NGP models, or have a ground plane adapter. Plus you will need decent coax cable, to minimize signal loss.

I bought the antenna years ago, so I'm not sure about any of the details on it. It's what I had on the back of the shelf. When I put it on the roof of the car, my reception goes way, way up. I think I've found the antenna I'm going to go with that will work just on my roof (mobile home).

The rig in the picture is just a temporary thing.

It will get me started, and I can look at other options as I become more familiar with all the technical aspects. As for running the cable, I have a business associate who has been running all sorts of cables for more than 40 years, and he says he has more cable lying around than he knows what to do with. That's covered.
