The other day, I'm looking at the Phoenix Fire CAD, and I saw a Working 1 Alarm Fire on K4. NEVER saw this before! I know they use the VHF band for fires. Is there a change upcoming that we should know about?

I just looked at the RWC system for phoenix on the database the k channels are fire frequencies on 700 mhz k4 is encrypted
it is listed under all trunked systems for Phoenix at the bottom of the list

It started out as a police incident, so they worked it on encrypted K4.

So, why didn't they work out the fire on VHF? Was that so that they could be in touch with PD?

Certain incidents will be handled on K4 for security reasons. This was one of them.
It's not unusual to hear units dispatched to calls on K4. They don't show up on the incident page, so you have to be listening to A1/K1 to catch them. Usually, they're for standbys when PD executes an arrest/search warrant. You might hear E25 dispatched to a call on K4, and the address given will be their own station. Other times, you'll only hear the dispatch tone, and, "K-deck 4, check MDC for info", but you won't even hear what apparatus are being dispatched. Details of the call will be on their MDT, so the public can't chase it.
Other times, if there's a VIP in town, FD standbys will be on K4.

Alot has changed "nationwide" after the Tucson incident. Mostly to ENC for all agencies. When the call warrants security they will use K4 for calls which used to goto normal talkgroups.
If any agencies said they would unencrypt those appeals mostly all been rescinded after Tucson incident.
Orange County decided to use Broadcastify for their dispatch audio I believe. No hope for them to actually un encrypt fire departments as they were trying to work out for the scanner community.

I do remember Station #4 getting such a call last summer, where they just used the Sta. address and sent out the call on K4. The big E is always scary to even think about.
