• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

To reply to everyone, yes, the state has P25, but we are not on that system. I’m a radio comes tech, however, the radios we r issued, are either UHF or VHF. Only the expensive APX radios are mulitband. My old department, we had the Motorola HT1250s I believe, that had vhf/uhf capability. But I can’t seem to find a used version with both. That’s what I’m looking for. If that makes sense to everyone. We are authorized to purchase our own for use as long as we r a member of a department. This isn’t my first rodeo :)

The APX 8000 and the Harris are the only multiband portables. There is no Kenwood multiband (though there is an EFJ VHF/700 "dual band" radio out there masquerading as a Kenwood.

HT series were never vhf/uhf. Only one or the other.

Yes, I recall the 750/1250/1550s were single band only, lowband, VHF High, or UHF. The Yaesu dual band part 90 portable was a 32 channel, wide-band only unit, so there is not much you can transmit on with them in the US now. Used Harris and APX multi band portables are coming down, but with the programming cable and software, the whole package is pretty steep for a personal radio.

Kenwood VP9000 dual band. You might find some older EFJohnson VP900 out there. The Armada programming software is easy to use. The radios are fully featured and work great.

In current production models you have two portable options, the Motorola APX8000 or the Harris XL-200p. In current production mobiles you have the Motorola APX8500 or Harris XG-100m. Harris will be releasing the replacement for the XG-100m (XL-200m) in a few months. Other options for mobiles that combine multiple radios into a single control head are available from Kenwood/Johnson however I see no benefit to them compared to just running two mobiles or investing in the Motorola or Harris offerings.

JVCKenwood/EFJohnson Viking radio overview at:

VP900 portables and VM900 mobiles are dual-band. Have programmed and used many. Check out the spec sheet at:

If you go mobile with the VM900, I'd recommend the Viking control head--it's just nicer.
Don't know when the 9000 will be out now ...
