The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I just contacted bestcbradio.com and asked them if they would send me one of these to do a video review on. We'll see what they say. If they do send me one. I'll do a complete on the bench review of all the features and how to use them and a real world install in a vehicle and test out on the open road. Should be fun. 😉
Hope they send you one.... I would love to see a range test on it

I have no use for such a small radio right now... maybe I could put it in my friend's jeep..... but I am very, very interested in it.

I only use the 40 CB band channels but after watching this video it does 80 from factory and can be modified in different ways to do a ton of different channels... pretty impressive

WOW I posted this and clicked play and it was in a foreign language??? I watched it on my computer, and it was in English??? I thought it odd as the guy was using American slang???? and it was in the user's voice???? so I looked and my computer automatically changed the
"audio Track" to English

this is worth watching .... hover the mouse on the upper right corner... the Gear symbol is the settings icon click on the "gear" ( settings ) symbol and switch audio track to English.

this A.I. stuff is scary... I honestly thought the guy was speaking English.

Sometimes I have a need for a tiny radio that i can throw in a car on a temporary basis. The fact that this one does not only SSB, but can do 12m and 10m was a bonus. Supposedly its PC programmable but I have not seen any software that works with it.

in the video I posted the guy said it's good that it's only 15 watts as you can put it in you backpack and carry a small 12 volt battery and use it on a POTA camping trip and it would last for many hours..... that's actually a great idea...

I wonder if I can get a handheld antenna so I could hold the antenna .... and the little battery pack and the radio... and use my third arm to key the mic and talk on it as I hike my woods ( I do a lot of my handheld CB tests while walking my dog out in the woods... but this is small enough I could try to carry it and try talking on SSB.... would be cool to be miles in the woods and use SSB.

I wonder if I could strap a Sirio 5000 to my head?

I'm done with the hiking SSB radio idea..... I found a 39 inch NGP No Ground Plane 39 inch NGP antenna that maybe I could strap onto a back pack... then I found a NON LITHIUM 12 volt rechargeable battery 18 pound battery that many radio operators say they can do 80 to 90 watts on a radio for up to 4 hours......

I could put the battery and the little SSB radio in a backpack ....and strap the antenna to the side????? but I'm not going to carry all that into the woods just to??? maybe talk SSB 10 miles back to the base station... the 18 pound battery is the biggest deterrent ... and that 39" antenna would be doubtful I could make a DX contact

I'll stick with just carrying a 200 gram smart phone.... but the future is going to be amazing!

Probably not a good idea to have an antenna that close to you while transmitting 15 watts. 🤔

Man, that reminds me of the modified beer-can hats with BNC connectors and co-ax instead of a straw they sold back in the 90's. Definitely not one of the high points of ham experiments. 😆

Lithium cells are OK for 12v supply, they don't make noise like the AA and AAA cells do.

AA type batteries are nominally ~1.3VDC, which is the native voltage of alkaline, NiCd, and NiMH cells. Lithium chemistry gives ~ 3.8VDC per cell, requiring a transformer to bring the voltage down to AA spec.

To get 12V, you just add cells in the proper series/parallel configuration. No transformer needed, so no added noise. Good bit lighter than other chemistries. LiFePO batteries have a good power density and can charge much faster than others.

There's lots of nice backpack setups with the G90 on YouTube. Internal tuner makes it a lot easier to work with a chunk of co-ax and wire as an antenna, but antenna depends on what you're willing to carry(or snooker someone else to). One of these new mini sidebanders could be a lot of fun on a day or overnight hike.

Been waiting for your review of this.

Another — and as it’s outside my experience others should step in — where that antenna/radio combo might also be good is when the portable is paired with a PRESIDENT Washington and its ability to act as relay to, say, a Randy farther out. Or a mini-SSB radio.

The Automatic Relay function turns your Washington into a relay point. It allows you to automatically transmit a message received on one channel to a transmit channel for up to 5 minutes.”

The 300HP Genset is always the Ace-in-the-Hole for portable operation.

As the Man-from-Mars Radio Hat is of wrong material for TX groundplane we’ll want a picklehaube with antenna mount already installed for our diplomatic delegation:

IMG_0143.jpeg

For proper aetheric respect only a 22” STARGUN from the Bopper Series will do.

IMG_0144.jpeg

Ready for the Martian visitation:

IMG_0145.jpeg

VOX-operated radio in a chest rig with resting slow blink modulation lamps facing outwards.

— Our diplomats having previously brushed up on their ancient Etruscan 10-Code vocabulary.

Mini-SSB released just-in-time?

I find the end of the description to me the most interesting…”regulation”… what regulation dictates such things? Domestic or foreign? Maybe some leftover WWII military design regulation?

Pith Helmet

Yes, as to the idea of “mil-spec”.
Meets specification.

There may not have much importation in the 1950s/early 1960s, but I remember stuff that was maybe for a party or gag gift; kiddie play day that looked sorta like “the real thing”, but wasn’t. One use.

I think the phrase included as a backstop to that. This radio hat would work. On a hat anyone who served with the Allies in the Pacific would recognize (likely it was what got the ball rolling — surplus, and radio gear as well).

My Dad still had one in the coat closet 40-years after the war ended. A slicker and one of these was to be seen in car trunks for changing a flat during the rain.

We borrowed from the British Army/Burma in this. Germans had their African version as did the Japanese. UPenn archaeological expedition in 1930s Iraq.

Moro Revolt is what started bringing them home to USA. Will stand up to hot and/or wet without losing convection cooling.

“Boonie Hat” is no substitute. Has its place.

TV has taught ensuing generations that only impractical and ill-fitting apparel is okay. Is, cool. (Stupid ball caps or post war tight Levi’s )

DAK Uniform re-pro example Wehrmacht North Africa. Anyone not believe the Germans make good tools? Long Rise (natural waist) against a bigger seat per ratio means no constrained movement unlike what’s been sold (a bill of goods, not what’s needed) since the 1960s. We had some of the same.

— There might still be an ancient fisherman still misses his radio hat by which to also listen to the ball game pre-transistor pocket radio.

Thats why it’s easy to date this. Americans by the mid/late 1950s had cash for the somewhat frivolous.

Tool, Not Toy, as Guiding Light:

Practical versus Impractical is an insurmountable problem for SSB-Mini in Mobile as the important controls need to be knob-controlled:

1). VOL
2). RFG
3). SQ
4). CH

They have their place other than at speed.

“I’ve been sold a Bill of Goods” (not what’s required for Mobile). The appearance of utility with condensed size as attractor.

— Exceptions for boats, riding lawnmowers and ATVs where laned travel & traffic not a hazard.

Portable, Not Mobile.

Martian Radio Hat not a good idea in the rain.
More gag than gift at $105.00 (circa 1956).

Would I like to have an SSB-Mini?
Sure would.

It arrived today. Holy crap is this thing small. First thing i noticed, it is slightly different than the RP-70. You don’t need to do the jumper mod at all. This radio doesn’t need to be opened. You hold the PTT and power on, then cycle through the 5 options consisting of BR, 10M, 12H, CB, and HF. Select what you want, then power cycle the radio. I choose BR as that's the normal 40 cb channels + 41-80 which is perfect for free banding, or listening to the nonsense on 27.425. I’ll be using this as a mobile and didn’t want to be bothered with changing bands. This mode gives me channels 1 - 80 without touching anything other than the channel knob.

The menu is simple with all the basic "set and forget" settings like mic gain, roger beep, NR level, backlight level, etc etc. The buttons on the face serve 2 functions. Tap for the first function, push and hold for the second function. Easy. The smartest thing they did was the “knob”. By default it changes channels. Push once and it adjusts volume. Push it again and it adjusts squelch. Push it once more to go back to channels selector. No menu needed to make those changes. RF gain is also as simple as press the RFG button for 2 seconds and adjust with the “knob”.

Only did brief “on air’ testing with my buddy 20 miles north of me. Barefoot on 38LSB i made the trip at s3-s4 with clean audio. He said it’s not loud, but not quiet either, and had no problem hearing me. He basically said it sounded “stock”, which it is. Stock mic, stock power. He also said it’s dead on frequency. We talked for about 45 minutes and it didn’t drift at all.

On the receive side it’s decent. I heard him fine, but his signal was a tad lower than he normally gives me on my other radios. There are 2 types of NR options. Standard, and AI. The AI NR is 10x better than the standard NR. The standard NR has a slight under water effect to it. Both work well knocking out the white noise though. Bonus: Dedicated NR button on the mic. Easy on, easy off.

The clarifier can be set for rx only, tx only, or both. It defaults to both (which i normally chose). Not really needed for general rag chewing, but handy to go in between channels, or fine tune people. Again, pretty easy. Push the CLA button and use the “knob”.

So far i think these are a steal at $129 for a mini rig with AM/FM/SSB. These do not have echo, ctcss/dcs, or weather band like the AT-5000, but they are also $50 less and a bit smaller in size. I’ll run this as a base station for the rest of the week and report back if i find any oddities or annoyances. I’ll probably toss it on the power meter as well and see what it does as it has 3 power options in the menu.

Edit: Mine did not come branded. The radio and mic are blank. I don’t mind this one bit. I’d rather it be unbranded for the cleaner look.

Dang, that's a  lot smaller than I imagined.

Sounds like they spent some time making this radio easy to use properly while mobile. Might even be easier than some full-sized rigs.

The Chinese have gotten frequency accuracy and stability on the money in the past couple of years, so that's not a surprising report. Kinda surprised that the Tx audio seems flat, most seem to have a bit of upper-midrange punch these days. It'll be interesting to see what's adjustable in a CPS for some of these new units.

...listening to the nonsense on 27.425...

It just ain't DXing without Calvin and Robert singing to each other. 🤣

Luiton LT-310SDR user manual is available here: Manual

Day 2: Not much else to report. Radio works as it should. Not a “screamer” on audio, but it’s clean. The TX audio is more along to lines of a narrow band 2 meter radio. The 3 power levels are 2w, 4w, 6w with 15w PEP. Perfect for a KL-203.

I never really looked at the Anytone 5000 when people were talking about it, ... I just did, and it looks AWESOME!

I was thinking of the Luiton LT-310SDR for my friends Jeep as he would love to try to reach me on SSB from his house 18.50 miles away ...we can't do it with the Radioddity CS-47... our max on AM is 14.90 miles
the Luiton LT-310SDR could easily fit above the rear view mirror on a windsheild frame mount. Jeep wind shield frame CB mount

looking at the Luiton LT-310 size and the Anytone 5000.... they are pretty close.

but the Luiton LT-310 only makes 6 to 7 watts on AM 15 watts on SSB ......
the Anytone 5000 does 10 plus watts on AM ( it say's 30 but they must mean 30 PEP? )... also the Anytone 5000 does 25 watts on FM & SSB

the Luiton LT-310 is

3.97 inches wide
5.03 inches long
.98 high

the Anytone 5000 is

4.88 inches wide
6.42 inches long
1.54 inches high

seeing I think I could get either above the Jeep rear view mirror I am thinking that Anytone is pretty darn sweet....
the Luiton LT-310 would be perfect with an amp... but I dislike amps... so I may have too keep my eyes out for the Anytone 5000.

this is a nice thread... amazing what is coming out... it won't be long before we have a SSB handheld again.

A 203 is a worthy tool. Changes outcomes.

The low-dollar LIDO Headrest Speaker Mount for the inevitable mobile use (set it up for AM-19 and leave it there).
