343.000 shouldn't be a good freq. Must be an image.

What he said... it's like a reflection or mirror image of the real frequency imprinted elsewhere. That's why you didn't get an LTR reading because the subaudible data probably wasn't included in the image.

457.0625 I as getting dispatch and ambulance but could not get a CT/LTR

Since this is 5 MHz higher than the OUTPUT freq (452.0625), this is the INPUT remember? LTR data (including talk group ID etc) piggy backs on every voice transmission below the audible range, and when the raw data is decoded it looks like binary code (11001010 etc).

There are two formats to this code. One is called an Outgoing Signal Word (OSW) and is broadcast out from each repeater channel on the OUTPUT frequency, and the other is called an Incoming Signal Word (ISW) and is generated by the user's radio as they transmit on the INPUT frequency. In other words, the repeater understands ISW language as it listens on the INPUT freq, and translates it to OSW language as it rebroadcasts the user's audio on the OUTPUT freq.

Scanner manufacturers only bother putting the OSW LTR format in the scanner, because they assume you'll be trying to trunk track the system and only the OSW helps you do that. The ISW contains less information.

Ok so on 452.0625 LTR 0-06-078 has been working really good. i get both dispatch and ambulance on there.

To the right of that talkgroup, did you see "R06"?

No I didnt. I wasnt really able to check good though because I was trying to figure out so much other stuff at the same time. I am also to far away I guess to pick up the signal so i cant check until I am closer to work.

Now should I have the bank closed or open? And should the bank be setup as a CONV or LTR?

Alright so I am having a problem getting it all squared away.

I have a Radio Shack Pro-97. I am currently trying to get First Responder in my radio properly. I have 3 banks right now I am using with different figurations trying to get First Responder in my radio properly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is how I have Bank 5 setup...

FIRST RESPONDER 343.000000 FM 0.0 D
FIRST RESPONDER 452.062500 LTR 0.0 D
FIRST RESPONDER 452.762500 LTR 0.0 D

Then...
FIRST RESPONDER 1614

I have this Bank Closed and set as Conv.

With this bank I can get First Responder but I also get everyone else on 452.0625 and 452.7625. I also get what sounds like someone is keying up for a split second. Sometimes it will happen a lot and sometimes it wont. I will hear First Responder on this bank then turn it off to see if I can pick it up on bank 6 or 7 and I dont.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is how I have Bank 6 setup...

Bank 6 Chan 00 452.062500 LTR 0.0 D
Bank 6 Chan 01 452.762500 LTR 0.0 D

Then...
FR 6 0-06-078

I have this bank Closed and set as LTR.

My problem is that I am not hearing anything on this Bank. I will hear First Responder in Bank 5 and will turn Bank 5 off to see if it Bank 6 will pick it up and it doesnt.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is how I have Bank 7 setup...

Site001 Ch01 0.000000 LTR 0.0
Site001 Ch02 451.512500 LTR 0.0
Site001 Ch03 0.000000 LTR 0.0
Site001 Ch04 0.000000 LTR 0.0
Site001 Ch05 0.000000 LTR 0.0
Site001 Ch06 452.062500 LTR 0.0
Site001 Ch07 0.000000 LTR 0.0
Site001 Ch08 0.000000 LTR 0.0
Site001 Ch09 0.000000 LTR 0.0
Site001 Ch10 452.412500 LTR 0.0
Site001 Ch11 0.000000 LTR 0.0
Site001 Ch12 0.000000 LTR 0.0
Site001 Ch13 0.000000 LTR 0.0
Site001 Ch14 452.762500 LTR 0.0

Then...
First Responder 0-06-078

On this Bank I do not pickup First Responder or anything else. I think I may have picked it up when I was closer to First Responder but currently at my house I do not get anything. I dont know if that has anything to do with it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

Bank 7 should be correct, but your problem is you alpha tagged the frequencies (and didn't include the memory channel numbers in the scanner) so we can't tell what memory slot it's actually in. If you cleared the text alpha tag for each freq, here's what it should look like:

Code:
Bank 7 Chan 00 0.000000 FM 0.0
Bank 7 Chan 01 0.000000 FM 0.0
Bank 7 Chan 02 451.512500 LTR 0.0
Bank 7 Chan 03 0.000000 FM 0.0
Bank 7 Chan 04 0.000000 FM 0.0
Bank 7 Chan 05 0.000000 FM 0.0
Bank 7 Chan 06 452.062500 LTR 0.0
Bank 7 Chan 07 0.000000 FM 0.0
Bank 7 Chan 08 0.000000 FM 0.0
Bank 7 Chan 09 0.000000 FM 0.0
Bank 7 Chan 10 452.412500 LTR 0.0
Bank 7 Chan 11 0.000000 FM 0.0
Bank 7 Chan 12 0.000000 FM 0.0
Bank 7 Chan 13 0.000000 FM 0.0
Bank 7 Chan 14 452.762500 LTR 0.0

I'll bet you that you started on M700 as channel 01 instead of M701, so when you got to channel 02, you were actually storing it into M701, etc. You won't hear anything if the channel numbers don't match each other. Make sure it looks EXACTLY like it looks above.

Remember you have to set each frequency you programmed to LTR mode like they are above, but NOW you have to set the whole BANK to LTR trunking mode by doing the following.

Now while in bank 7 in manual mode, press [PGM] -> [TRUNK]. If bank 7 is set to Conventional, it will say the following on the screen:

Code:
ID Bank 7
Trunking mode
not selected,
press Mode key.

Press [MODE] until you set the bank to LTR trunking mode. Then the screen will look like this:

Code:
ID BANK 7-0 ON
LTR TGID#00
LTR: none

Press [0][0][6][0][7][8][ENT]. Now the screen will look like this:

Code:
ID BANK 7-0 ON
LTR TGID#00
LTR: 0-06-078
ID # 0-06-078

Press [TEXT] and write yourself an alpha tag, when you're done press [ENT]. Here's an example:

Code:
ID BANK 7-0 ON
LTR TGID#00
LTR: 0-06-078
First Responder

When that's done, press [MAN] to get out of the bank ID list and go back to manual mode.

Press [FUNC] -> [.] (the period key below the number 8 key). It should say "BANK CLOSED" on the bottom line. If it says "BANK OPEN", repeat the process so it says "BANK CLOSED."

Now [SCAN] and turn off all the other banks except 7 by pressing the number keys until the screen looks like:

Code:
.......7..
.......-..
Scanning Up...
Bank 7

You WILL hear First responder, and just first responder and no one else, and the system will trunk track properly. I've gone into ridiculous detail, so if you still don't hear anything, you missed one of the above steps. Follow it step by step and it will work.

Enjoy, :)

inigo88,

Where I got Bank 7 was from importing it from radioreference database on Win97.

I just did everything you posted and put it in Bank 5 to test it out. Thank you very much for all that.

People like you is exactly what makes RadioReference and the forums awesome.
Thank you for spending the time and going into such great deal publicly for darkstar.

Yes I believe so. I have heard FR on it. Where I am at is pretty far from the dispatch center and doesnt get the best reception. When I get closer or go to work i will test to comfirm 100% but I think I got it working now with your help.

Thanks again and to everyone else who has helped me.

One final trick, GRE scanners don't ignore the squelch knob when in trunking mode. As long as you only have LTR mode frequencies in the bank (or lock out any conventional ones with the [L/O] key... to find them again later press [FUNC]+[L/O] while in manual mode), you can turn the squelch knob ALL the way DOWN (where you would normally hear static all the time) and then scan just that bank.

The radio will remain silent and you'll only hear FR when they key up, but by turning the squelch all the way down you *might* improve your reception at home by letting in weaker signals from farther away. Let me know how that goes! Just remember to turn the squelch back up when scanning other banks, otherwise it will just stay on one frequency and give you static. ;)

Does weather affect how good the scanner picks up things? Like will the scanner not pick things up as good on a cold rainy day over a nice sunny day or is there no difference?

you need to remove

FIRST RESPONDER 343.000000 FM 0.0 D

343.000 is NOT one of your frequencies - it is an incorrect freq capture - you probably had the scanner too close to the radio when trying to frequency capture - the scanner gets confused from the local oscillators in the radio -
