Still some in service in my area, although I'm sure many have been upgraded. The point remains the same however as the XTL is EOL as well.

yes Moto will be pushing APX. I wonder if they will end up buying dual band for flexability or just go with the 700/800 units.

I would question whether there are any Astro Spectra's left in service. I thought most had been upgraded to XTL's?

The Golden Helmet OPP bike at the Auto Show recently was an Astro Spectra. I've also seen a few cruisers that were Astro Spectras. I say this because upon boot up they don't show XTL5000 on the screen which I believe a W4 XTL does? The good thing is that since most are XTLs it would imply that Phase 2 isn't in the plans necessarily.

The radio brick is an XTL the head is a ASTRO Spectra W series. If that is the case for all the units then a firmware or hardware upgrade is a real possibility.

I have not seen any activity in the 700 band locally that would imply any testing going on yet!!!

Who said anything about them moving to 700MHz?

I suspect they'll stay in VHF and the XTL's will receive a firmware upgrade and a new flashcode.

They only hardware upgrade they could possibly add is the addition of an encryption module.

I agree with Mike, there is absolutely no reason for them to move to 700mhz. The vhf infrastructure is already in place, and most importantly... frequencies are assigned. Getting a whack of new 700mhz frequencies allocated across the province would take forever.

Can the province afford to have the OPP go encrypted. How much did they spend to put laptops in all of their cruiser???

Afford

Other agencies have found the money to go encrypted and they were smaller, I think they will be able to afford it .

Encryption isn't nearly as expensive as it used to be, especially for a big account like that.

More than likely gone. They'll switch to a DVRS and use P25 on their portables.

This will allow them to encrypt their communications from the portable to the car.

keep our fingers crossed they don't go the encryption route, I wont have anything interesting to listen to anymore

Just what I feared. Now that our scanners having finally caught up with most digital systems (including Provoice, DMR, and NXDN)--the damn technology is changing again. If it's not broke, DON'T FIX IT. Anything to p*** away more tax money on...
