Flight for Life obviously has some very smart PR people. It may have cost the company about $500 to make that short flight. A small investment considering the widespread PR and adverstising value they got out of it. And TV viewers love puff news pieces like that!!!
They have really ramped up there outreach recently now that Medevac, AirLife, Tristate, Careflight, Memorial Star etc are competing for flights. They used to be the only game in town, no-longer.

When there is an emergency what determines which helicopter ambulance (Flight for Life, Airlife) responds? Especially if both are in service at that time. Do they have territories? Does it depend on what the incident commander requests?

In my experience, it depends alot on who their medical director is affiliated with. All paramedics work under a license and under the supervision of a medical director. The departments affiliated with St. Anthony's and Lutheran hospitals all were with Flight for Life. When Swedish was sold the paramedics were supervised by the same parent company that owns Air Life, so they all changed.
In Colorado Springs, Penrose and Memorial do the same thing with the same divisions. Penrose is a Sisters of Charity hospital like St. Anthonys, so Flight for Life. Memorial is city owned and Colorado Springs Fire paramedics run under their license.
The hospital with the most paramedics licensed under it is Denver Health and they do not have a helicopter.
