First, it’s important to know the AM CB frequencies are the 11 meter band frequencies around 27 MHz, on the VHF Low Band and have been around forever. The FM frequencies are relatively newer frequencies listed under Family Service radio on the UHF Band. Both are license free. Once this is understood, your question can be answered… yes, the scanners will receive both bands and the proper mode is assigned, be it AM or FM, or can be assigned.

N1chu referenced the frequencies in the uhf band. I just assumed the frequencies were the same. Gary123 and nd5y referenced the same frequencies as AM. So the short answer is same frequencies different mode. Again that what I thought. Thanks for the replies.

the FCC allowed manufactures to ADD FM to the AM CB channels.
so, same frequency different mode.
most every radio has AM as the default mode in the CB bad, so you would have, if possible, change the default mode and you can only pick one.
so you would have to set up a separate system to listen to the other mode.
i see on the 325P2 there is a setting for band defaults, but not on my 396T.

my (the wire's) 396XT just got home and it also has a setting for band defaults.
i will just leave them on AM.
and of course i could set one to AM and the other to FM.

I was unaware the FCC has allowed the 27MHz CB band to also use FM mode. In my day it was only AM for the first 23 channels and expanded to AM Sideband for the added channels when they went to 40 channels. FM CB came much later on a different band, after they dropped the licensing requirements… and they included such restrictions as permanently mounted antennas on the portable radios that prevented changing antennas to higher gain antennas, all in an effort to keep these low powered radios from expanding their range over what they thought would be manageable from an enforcement standpoint.

n1chu, me thinks you are confusing FRS with FM CB.

Cobra petitioned the FCC to allow this.

The FCC changed the rules last year.

Nobody (at least on RadioReference) refers to FRS as FM CB. I don't know where you heard that but its not a commonly used term.

It was used to differentiate between the unlicensed 27 MHz AM band and the unlicensed UHF FM band. But that was before the FCC allowed FM on the 27 MHz AM CB band… not uncommon to hear it described that way but it’s a moot point now that FM is allowed on the 27 MHz band.

They might be calling it Family Service Radio but it’s commonly referred to as FM CB. I’ve never heard that the FCC allowed FM on the 27 MHz band CB, just AM and AM Sideband.

Yes the FCC allows FM on the 27 Mhz band now in the US. Why I do not know!

Apparently several manufactures petitioned the FCC for an amendment to current regulations to help bolster business and increase sales of 27 MHz Citizen's Band radio equipment.

Why I do not know!

Because people and the CB manufacturers asked for it.
FM has been legal on CB in other countries for decades. U.S. is just finally catching up.
Being able to run CTCSS/DCS on FM CB has the potential to make it much more useful for some users. No reason why we should stay in the 1970's.
