I'd be using it in a mobile application w/ noise filtering on the power leads. I travel alot (driving about 25k/yr) and find it a good companion when out in the middle of nowhere.

Airband Reception
It mostly depends on ANtenna, Location/s
and of course your location
I,e, living next to an airport or miles away
The scanner doesn't matter that much..
Though Rat shack is kinda lame but picks up air just fine for me at least
I mean that is the whole point of the FAA etc (airports to planes) still being in AM.
AM is more dependable fo their application.

A.M. runs along the Curviticature of the earth
wheres fm, nmf etc depends on line of sight.
you know tower to mobiles,
If a building or trees, hills ,moutains would mess with
reception and even block reception.

Not quite right. I think AM is used because at lower signal strengths, the signal to noise ratio makes it easier to understand.
When FM is getting weak, all you get is a lot of white noise.

When aircraft started using radios, chassis size and weight was and still is premium. AM technology allowed for building smaller and lighter chassis's then did FM. Of course solid state technology reduced either chassis to about the same. Over the years however, AM infrastructure developed world wide and never turned back--too costly.
