how many of the radios ordered by the state of new jersey are capable of encryption? searched the state of new jersey's website and radioreference and couldn't find an answer. im assuming they might not get encryption on all radios as when los angeles wanted to buy 10,000 motorola sabers, it cost 5 million more for encryption. asking because im trying to decide whether to buy a digital trunking scanner. thanks

If they encrypt you can't monitor. Oh duh sorry if they can't do it, that is a very good question? I hope they eventually all won't because sadly there won't be much to listen to. I will will still scan the airways no matter what!

I THINK most of the radios Motorola makes today have a basic software encryption feature included. If the buyer feels he needs a higher level of encryption he can order the optional encryption module that gives a higher level of encryption. With the basic software encription it is only a matter of selecting it when programming radio.

The base models for agencies using the NJICS is the APX 6000 (my friend in my amateur radio club is the project leader for the NJDOT ITS teams, and showed it to me a few months ago).

The APX line have what's called a MACE processor that's built right into the main board by default (Motorola Advanced Crypto Engine). The latest radios have the ability right out of the box now.

My 7000 has 4 formats active (ADP, DES-XL, DES-OFB, & AES), and I have personally seen a 7000 with 5 (the previous 4 + AES-GCS, where even the OTAR handshake request is encrypted). I don't own a KVL, so those features are kind of worthless to me!

re:

thanks W2SJW, i think i'll wait 2 years before buying an expensive digital scanner, believe that was about the amount of time from when philadelphia went online with their apco 25 trunked system to when they encrypted all the interesting talkgroups
