Shopping center fire follows liquor store robbery, police believe suspect is dead

Flames engulfed Antietam Village Shopping Center on Opossumtown Pike beginning around 2 p.m. today. One witness, Ruth Westman, an employee at Frederick Uniform across Opossumtown Pike in Rose Hill Plaza, said, "The whole mall is in flames."
FREDERICK — Jim’s Liquors at 1595 Opossumtown Pike in the Antietam Village Shopping Center is burning, with heavy flames coming from the building, according to the Frederick Police Department and eyewitness accounts.
The fire started around 2 p.m. An hour earlier, police said the store was robbed by a man with a gun.
A police officer reported hearing a shot fired in the area of the liquor store, according to Sgt. Clark Pennington.
Lt. Tom Chase of the Frederick Police Department believes the suspect died in the fire.
Chase also said that no police officers were injured.
According to a spokesperson at Maxim Healthcare Services, the roof has partially collapsed in several places.
News-Post staff photographer Sam Yu confirms that Motter Avenue is closed northbound from the U.S. 15 interchange.
An employee at La Petit Academy, a daycare center, located at 185 Thomas Johnson Drive said the academy is currently on lockdown.
Ruth Westman, an employee at Frederick Uniform, across Opossumtown Pike in Rose Hill Plaza, said it appeared the blaze started at a shop in the middle of the upper floor of the two-story shopping center about 2:00 p.m.
"The whole mall is in flames," she said about 2:20.
