That is an ops frequency used by mil aircraft training in Military Operations Area (MOA) R-5503 A/B which is both the Brush Creek MOA and
Buckeye MOA over southern Ohio. Roughly it runs from Adams County to around Chillicothe. The city of Hillsboro is lies underneath the middle of the airspace.

Units training in this area on a regular basis nclude:

178th TW OH ANG "SABERS" Springfield-Beckley MAP, Springfiled, Ohio
180th FW OH ANG "STING" Toledo Express AP, Toledo, OH
122nd FW IN ANG "SNAKES" Baer Field, Ft. Wayne, IN

Refueling is provided by:

121st ARW OH ANG "SLUFF, TAZZ" , Rickenbacker IAP, Columbus, OH
171st ARW PA ANG "STEEL" , Pittsburgh IAP, Pittsburgh, PA
434th ARW "MASH, INDY, IRISH", AFRC Grissom ARB, Peru, IN

R-5503 A/B is controlled by Indianapolis ARTCC (KZID).

Three other main frequencies to keep an ear on:

301.60
259.40
316.1250

The 178th uses 138.625, 139.700, 141.60, 141.700
and 142.1250 on a regular basis (All AM Mode of course!)

This page will give you a rough map of the area, and some
frequencies to monitor:

255.400 is a nationwide mil air frequency for working
Flight Service Stations (FSS).

What you are hearing is image bleedover from actual radio/TV in your area.... not sure how to fix that on the 96 to illiminate it.

Are you using an external antenna?

Do you want to hear this ir NOT hear it?

If it is someting you do not want to hear lock it out. It could be an image.

Are you hearing it in AM or FM mode? That is an AM freq.

I don't believe the PRO-96 was 'built' for the Mil-Air Band. Granted, it can be 'opened up' to allow those frequencies to be plugged in. But, that isn't the intent of the PRO-96.

If you wish to monitor Mil-Air, you might have to purchase another radio that is better equipped for Mil-Air Monitoring.

They will be discussing that at the next Scanner Meeting in Parma next Sunday. You might want to drop by and see if they can help you there.

Isn' the pro-96 almost deaf in this range? I thought that was what I read somewhere.

You would be best served to get a BC250D or something similar. They are coming down in price due to all the newer models out.

You were likely getting a TV station like the other person stated or bleedoff from a Cable TV line.

It probably sounds rough due to a low signal level and the fact that TV audio is much wider than the modulation used for normal land mobile use. It's probably overmodulating the receiver.

For good milair reception you need a decent receiver if you want to hear something at any distance.

The 780XLT does a great job of this.

It looks much better here but the 96 is not deaf in the Mil range it is just not as sensitive.

FRQ = PRO-93 | PRO-96
100 = 20.39 µV | 0.26 µV
225 = 0.45 µV | 0.31 µV
250 = 0.85 µV | 0.60 µV
275 = 2.16 µV | 1.39 µV
300 = 5.18 µV | 2.88 µV
325 =10.95 µV | 1.58 µV
350 =30.16 µV | 0.96 µV
375 =173.57 µV | 0.99 µV
400 =60.88 µV | 0.55 µV
425 = 0.39 µV | 0.29 µV

(My apologies to Starrsoft, Win96 and anonymous...)

Well it isn't as bad but I would think that was still be unusable for practacle purposes unless you're right under them.

Thanks for the info. I was contemplating doing this with 96 too but I won't bother now.

Now I really know for sure why I couldn't get 381.300 on my old 93.

173 microvolts

:lol:

I'm glad no one told my Pro96 it was deaf on 225-400 or I wouldn't be able tohear all the traffic around here. I have no probems at all with milair on the Pro96.

I'm glad to hear it does work. I guess I was thinking of the 93 which I own one of too. I did the mod and was not at all happy with it. I figured the 96 was similar.

With the mod, do you gain any search capability in that range?

I'm still amazed at the performance of the 780xlt for milair.

I'm not to sure what you mean, but yes after you open up the frequencies it will scan and search.

I have a 780, 895, 2004 and a 2006 all dedicated to milair. I am in a major airforce training and operations area. I use the Pro96 when I am mobile or sitting out on the porch watching the planes practice formations. Sit there with my cup of coffee and listen to the 96, hear a pilot say break left and watch two planes off in the distance turn left.
