FRG-9600 Squelch, AM Mode

Using my 9600 in AM mode, monitoring one freq, with the squelch set there is still a very audible hiss present.
It is very noticeable and annoying. Is this a common issue with this receiver or does mine have issues?

Thats a bummer, I bought it primarily for military air monitoring but the hiss is horrible.
