Yaesu: FT-2900R

Hello.

I was talking with a someone this morning and they told me they have a Yaesu FT-2900R. He told me he wants a few channels added to it and scan added on to some of the channels. I don't have the software for it.

So just wondering if anyone on here can tell me if there is any free software out there that I can download to use for it, like would the CHIRP Software work on it. If not, I am not buying any software for it, because I will probably only do this radio one time only.

So let me know if there is any free software out there to use for it and if CHIRP will work and if it does will download that, and use that software.

A few channels added by hand would take less time than getting on here and asking about software...

I know but would like to do it all by software alot quicker and I never really played with this type of radio before so not doing anything by hand and messing it up.

So let me know if there is free software out there to download and use and if CHIRP Software will work.

That is all I am asking here.

Have you even checked out CHIRP yet?

How did the radio get programmed prior to this person asking you?

Do you, or the person have the correct programming cable?

I just downloaded it and if I have the right cable will try it.

Someone else obviously programmed it for him but don't know who.

Anyways will try and if the cable I have doesn't work then won't bother with it, not buying the right cable or software for it just to use it one time only.

While programming with software is easier and less prone to error, any radio owner should know how to hand program their radios. What happens if you are out somewhere and need to add a repeater frequency and your computer is at home?

Chirp lists all supported radios on the main page…

The only programming software I'm aware of for the 2900 is from RT Systems.

Anyways will try it with the chirp software and the cable I have that might work for it and if it works ok if not then this person is out of luck for me doing it unless I decide to buy the right cable (if I don't have the right one) and the software for it off ebay along with the cable.

You do realize that the 2800 and the 2900 are almost the same radio with the exception of power ratings?

The 2800 is a little different firmware wise from the 2900.

Chirp supports the 2900 in daily builds meaning it's a fairly recent addition (only took them 4 years, yet they get the baofengs updated every few weeks).

Been waiting for them to add the GM300/Maxtrac/Radius chassis for about 3 years now…another story.
