New guy here. I just picked up an FT65 as kind of a knock around handheld. I noticed there’s a threaded insert next to the speaker microphone connection ports. Is there a specific kind of plug that has a screw to add some strain relief? I’m planning to use this thing for skiing almost always with a speaker/mic. It’d be awesome to add some robustness to that connection if that’s the intent. I noticed the ssm -17b didn’t have a screw. Is there another option?

The FT-65 uses a two pin connector. There is no other strain relief. Some Yaesu radios like the VX-6R used special thread in single pin mic connection. This is actually for water resistance not strain relief.

I see. Any idea what the threaded insert cast into the radio above the ports is for?

I have not come across a Yaesu mic that uses that screw insert. I use a Velcro loop to keep an external mic in place and avoid strain on the port area.

Only Yaesu knows. Or, maybe not. The FT-4 and FT-65 were built for Yaesu by one of the Chinese radio manufacturers allegedly with the same components as other cheap, Chinese radios, but to Yaesu's specs. That threaded insert may have been something that was included in the design, but Yaesu never followed through with having accessories designed that could use it.

This is exactly the case. I read omewhere else that it was for something Yaesu planned to do but never followed through on.

I spoke with yaesu about it. Sounds like they’re may be some aftermarket options but they couldn’t point me to anything specific.

In any case I’d like to see yaesu make something like the vx8r again. Something with aprs and more rugged. I’ve got an Ft3dr, but I’m always worried I’m gonna get snow/water in it.
