HaHa, yea digital fixes all interoperability problems.

Why not just buy the officers digital capable radios and program both systems in, then they can switch back and forth as needed.

Well, Atlanta Police have DeKalb Police in their radios, Atlanta Fire has Cobb Fire in their radios, DeKalb Fire and Gwinnett fire have each other's channels in their radios, but Fulco can't talk to anyone!

I know this is a dumb idea, but has anyone ever thought of using ITAC???? Naw, too easy!

the new county manager is another "import" who has no clue how things work in metro Atlanta. His comments about the lack of a single 911 center is big indicator he lacks background and knowledge of what is at play here. In 2005, Fulton and APD were both on Smartnet II trunking systems, both had "compatible" radios, yet did not share talkgroups or use I-TAC's because the "problem" isn't technology, it's a combination of egos and locus of control by two different governments that don't work together.

Pissing more money away on fancy radios are not going to put a dent in the problem. FCSO doesn't respond to APD calls and vice versa. The separatism of what is Atlanta is unique and radios won't fix it. As was admitted the FC TRS works fine, what isn't mentioned is that the Atlanta XTS5000's can also operate on legacy Smartnet analog systems with no additional software, backward compatibility is standard on these radios (Motorola even promotes this in the sales literature)

Again another "crisis" that is being spun into justification to spend taxpayers money that could be better spent elsewhere. This comes at a time when Fulton county wants to raise the millage rate 39 percent next fiscal year.

Glad I live in Cobb.

Two points...

Funny, how the Fox 5 video showed the radio on the county deputies belt....an XTS series Motorola radio! If I'm not mistaken can't they be programmed to operate digital too, even P25? All it would take is a flash of the radio and poof, the deputy on the analog system can press a button and talk on an Atlanta group.
Second, Atlanta's P25 system allowed for "patching," like when Atlanta PD/FD was on both their analog and new digital system before ATL went full-blown digital. Why can't they open up a patched talk group so the analog guys can chat with the digital guys? They did it a couple months ago!
Oh, but wait, I get it. They have to spend tens of millions of dollars first!
Brilliant!

Just like Erik said - ego's! WHO is going to make the decision on what channel to use? Atlanta - "Tell Fulton to meet us on XXX channel". Fulton - "Tell Atlanta to meet us on YYY Channel". Won't happen. What would be perfect (but don't let Atlanta or Fulton know), is to combine the Atlanta & Fulton systems into one and dispatch center into one (kinda like Cobb County - They dispatch both Cobb & Marietta). It really shouldn't matter any way - the way everyone is LEAVING Fulton and forming their own cities, there won't be any need for FCPD/FCFD any more.

You know, if anyone in the media actually had any clue to TRS, they could simply ask the directors of the respective TRS's one of two questions:

1. What is preventing you from having the adjoining TRS owner from putting their channels in your radios?
2. Have you ever heard of ITAC?

Motorola must be reading this thread and laughing themselves all the way to the bank!

But, that would make too much sense.

Let alone, a report who actually know what is going on. Hmmm, I wonder if someone could tag along with the reporter when they are asking question to say "you are full of sh*t" when they give the typical Motorola reply.
