Looks like, depending on which brand of door opener transmitter I pick up, my garage door opener will activate at somewhere between 40-100'. It has about a 6" piece of wire dangling out of the case. Will a longer piece of wire help? Is there an ideal length?

About 9 inches, which includes the trace on the circuit board and the wire inside the case, leaving about 6 inches sticking out.

That's pretty much what's there.
I'd read other discussions about "longer is better but only IF you pick the correct length multiples". Would even multiples of 9" be worthwhile? e.g. 90"

Nah.

1/4 wave is is fine.

Odd multiples of 1/4 wave act just about the same as 1/4 wave

Our station openers have external antennas mounted on the outside of the bay doors. They work from about a block away.

I'm curious how this works.....I don't necessarly want to raise the door from a block away, but, at 40' you have to hit the button and stop. If I could fire it from 200' away that'd be just about right.

well, at our station, the door openers are more of an industrial unit than one you would buy at sears, ours have antennas on them too, and relays that go into dispatch so they can be opened there. I would imagine that the ones like these have a slightly higher power, and the units themselves have a better detection range, ours work from about 300 yards

Just get a receiver that is capable of decoding either QCII or MDC, and use your 110w mobile and hammer down on the PTT about a block away and watch it open.

All this because you're too impatient to sit still for 15 seconds? This being the case the solution to your problem is Ritalin.

Amazing how a simple question takes a turn. We've had words before RCA, I can see we'll have them again.

More like 380 MHz, IIRC.

I think there are a lot of common frequencies, such as 304, 318, 390, 418 (As I best recall)

If you don't want to see what he has to say go into your "user cp" and add him to the ignore list.
