I'm actively considering a Yaesu FT-7800 or FT-8800 to replace my aging fleet of Motorola mobiles

I've had the FT-8800R and sold it. I liked it a lot but I would now get a FT-7800R. It's got many of the same features as the 8800, except two transceivers in one unit, but the keys and display are backlit, which is great for mobile use.

Biggest peeve of mine with ham gear? Lack of dual priority scanning, nuisance delete and duty cycle.

My biggest amateur gear peeve is the weak/thin audio and overall performance compared to commercial gear. For just a simple single-band radio can't they do better selectivity and sensitivity? I'm used to commercial gear, ala Motorola, GE/Ericsson, and Kenwood and after that you're kinda spoiled.

Even though there is no law against them, the officer could confiscate it, and you will have to be the one to fight to get it back. I've had scanners in my vehicles for the past 30 years, and never once encountered a problem with law enforcement. I actually had an Alpharetta Officer tell me I had a better set up than he had in his patrol car! :)

Since there's no law against them, i.e., it's NOT illegal, what is the cop's legal basis for confiscating a scanner?

The officer can do about anything he wants to. If one "flaunts" it in front of an officer, then they deserve to have it confiscated. You are the one who has to take your smart a$$ to court to get it back! (Not you n1das - the person who had it grabbed) It's people who tell officers "I can have it and there is nothing you can do about it" who deserve it. What grounds? Using it in a felony, public nusiance, impersonating an officer (how many people put their scanner on their hip and "act" like a cop?), the list goes on.

Agreed! The cop can do just about anything he wants to but can't act without authority to back it up.
