...on the PSR500....

So I picked up an external (CB-type) speaker for my PSR500 tonight ... I was looking for an amplified speaker but decided to try one without an amplifier... only to find that the audio coming out of the headphone jack appears to be severly limited...

I recall seeing some mods for other radios in the past that help overcome this limitation (grounding wire, etc.)...

Sorry if this has been asked/posted before but does anyone know if we can get "more" from that jack somehow?

There is a note in the manual that when connecting an external speaker it recommends the use of an amplified speaker. I also tried a speaker that was not amplified, and it simply didn't work. I now use the RS amplified speaker, and it works great.

This is one idea someone here came up with that apparently works well. I think it bascially bypasses the limiting circuit for a handheld scanner that is used to keep from blowing your ears when you use headphones. That is why they won't drive an external speaker as efficiently as you need, especially when running mobile. Of course you can go with an amplified speaker as mentioned.

"Get a small paperclip, wrap one end around the base of the antenna jack and the other end around the jack of the external speaker."

I can confirm this as well. I do this trick on my base scanner....
