glitchy P25 scanner, or do I just not understand how it work?

I would say to give it a shot. The RXer on Unication pagers are amazing. I can be in the middle of uptown CLT and still connected to the Gaston Simulcast with 3 or 4 bars of signal

How good is the receiving capability of the G5? Should I setup my in-county zone to only hit off the tower closest to our dispatch center (13 miles from my house as the crow flies)?

With the right elevation, I've had good receive off sites 45-50 miles away. As long as there isn't too much in the way or interference, it's EXCELLENT.

Idea for you - separate all the sites within reach of you into their own "Trunking Systems" in PPS. Create a zone and do ALL the fire talkgroups relevant to that department into a knob position. Duplicate this knob position, but change the site. Play around with that and start seeing which talkgroups are appearing on which site when a call goes out. If you don't hear it on one site, swap to the next knob position with a different site, until you hear the call coming through. It may help you narrow down where things are coming from.

Just for example, what I've got going up here in Toronto:

Reason being... Dispatches always come from the South. But if it's a fire handled by North Command, they assign it to a North Tac channel. If no trucks come from the south, no one affiliates the North Tac channel to the south site - so I move to the North site, as it's own knob position.

Hope that makes some degree of sense and hopefully you get it figured out! The Unication pagers are fantastic and I'm ready to buy a 2nd one at this point.

That's a good idea if the county uses "region" (as I call it) tac channels. If they're in the county I'm thinking about, they use countywide fire tac channels. Tac 1-10 so it would be the best to try to set up the dispatch and tac channels on the site closest but also in the county they're monitoring.
I do love that idea, if I move somewhere that has that kind of setup, I'm 100% using that.

So, I took everyone's advice and re-programmed the sites so that certain talk groups would only look for certain sites.

Unfortunately, I found that I need to site-trunk my pager at home because I'm right on the edge of coverage of the tower located at our dispatch center. So, for the dispatch channel I'm trunking the 3 sites on my end of the county. Then I set up 3 knob positions for the tac channels. Each position hits a specific tower so I can try and match whatever site my guys are operating at.

I get the feeling that USAI repeaters are more powerful than VIPER repeaters? It seems like one UASI site covers a much larger area.

Ahh gotcha. That's weird. I usually have the opposite effect. Viper does great whereas I can barely hit UASI in parts of my county

All the sites in my county have a listed 15-mile range. And we have non-negligible terrain. If you don't site trunk, you don't have great reception (apparently).
