I recall reading in the Baton Rouge Sunday Advocate an article about
the State Police in Virginia doing away with the ten codes. In a way
I wish the powers that be would make a National mandated ten code
that would be the same all across the country. Because there are many variations of the code. I know in the State of Louisiana they
use the Criminal Code revised statue numbers for dispatch codes and the ten code is so different from the local agencies also. If most of the country a 10-50 would mean a traffic accident. Here it means no
traffic for you, resume patrol. If there was a Nationally Mandated dispatch and ten code it would be a lot easier in situations where as if you have an incident, let's say a pursuit that crosses county and state lines. Everyone would be on the same page.

HUH???? Anything now said in code can be said in english just as efficiently. Just because NYC uses 10 codes doesn't mean they couldn't live without them.

Its like I said....we don't talk to each other using 10 codes, so why use them if there is a microphone in the conversation. Just never understood it.

They would be also if they spoke in plain english already, and there would be no need for nationally mandated anything. Shouldn't need the government to tell someone how to talk.

JMHO: I really dont see the 10- codes going away in the big cities such as New York City where when I listen to NYPD SOD there is constantly Jobs going out such as " 10-54 rescue of an aided at ......" or " confines of the 68 pct 10-13 over division at....". And if you listen to the individual precinct frequencies, whenever there's a 10-53 (car accident) there always has to be a final disposition S/A "93Q (the type of report done) 99T4 (Vehicle accident with no tow required) 97RMA (Aided refused medical attention)." Just another side note here, NYPD usually cuts off the 10- part of the code to speed up the process even more. And we can't forget about the Fire Department side, "Engine 284 to Brooklyn 10-75, Fire on the 2nd floor". That can get anybody's blood pumping. It speeds up final dispositions on the fire side as well. "Engine 159 to Staten Island 10-18 (1 Engine and 1 Truck operating) for a 10-35 code 2 (Alarm System Emergency - Unnecessary Alarm).

My Point is that the removal of 10- codes from small departments (and I cant speak for small departments because I have no background with any) might eliminate confusion whereas in a large city or municipality the 10- Code system can speed up the process and clear the air for other units sending or receiving jobs.

Well I mean they are really pushing it, they have made it next to mandatory, in virginia. I wouldn't call the Virginia State Police a small department, nor would I call the Richmond Police Department a small department. This is just two of the bigger departments I can think of. I am not speaking for Northern Virginia or the Hampton Roads area.
