I read on RR its good to check if any PDs in your area are going encripted in the near future if you are planning to splurge for a new toy.I called Pitt Co Emergency Services and the nice guy that took my call said that to his knowledge no county ems or FD is going that way.I then called GPD and asked the same question the nice guy that is in charge of GPD communication says his goal is to be fully scrambled both FD and PD within a year providing he can get all the gear he needs which is slow due to the supply chain. It hurt my feelings a bunch I really have been lusting for the colorful 200 but Ill just keep my 436 and just keep up with what I can keep up with. The world is going in the wrong direction I quess

Actually when VIPER changes over in 2025 one of the requirements is the replacement radios have to include the ability to be encrypted.

This of course does not mean that everyone will be encrypted but they have that ability. I suspect that fire departments will at least dispatch calls in the clear, especially if they have volunteer firefighters in their jurisdictions.

Regards Richard

If thy have Volunteer Fire and Ems thy are not going to encrypted that system .Like hear in Charlottle thy are not going to do the ems or fire and finger cross thy will not do the police . There is to many radios to encrypt hear to do police thy have a tac channel already. But time will tell. If you are look to get the sds200 . Get the scanner .Then if thing change sell it. I have 8 scanner and I have the sds100 and 200 and I am not scared of the encrypt and you are right the world is going in the wrong direction.

I just ordered two APX6500s and they didn’t say anything about an encryption requirement for VIPER. I’ll call the rep and double check tomorrow.

This notice may help you understand, especially page three, where it states...

"With the adoption of the Common State Keys, VIPER has elected to place an additional
requirement on all radios being sold for use on the VIPER system, therefore any manufacturer
that is unable to support the key loading all of the above algorithms (ADP/ARC4, DES and
AES) via KVLx000 device, shall have their radios removed from the approved radio list
effective 1 January 2023."

NC Highway Patrol can all ready monitor Davidson County Sherrif/Police since they "Have the code" which is a universal ENC code. So anyone on viper with viper radio priveliges to that Talkgroup should be able to hear things in the clear. At this time highway patrol dispatch is in the clear so if a major police event is going on in your county you can use the highway patrol talkgroups to get an idea of whats going on.

It's better that you order them with AES encryption now because if it's needed in the future, the only you can add it is by sending the radio to depot. It is not something that can be done in the field.
