I have been having issues with programming and GPS locking and unlocking. Seems when i set ranges for certain cities and sites the scanner arbitral Ly starts locking out cities and towns that I am close too. I could be in a city and the scanner will lock it out. Has anyone had this happen. I have tested numerous settings.. I am now confused. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. I live in Rhode Island and scan all of Rhode Island Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Are you using RR download or your own custom file and what software? Does the GPS have an external antenna?

You might try the following:

Turn ON Scan Full Database
Turn OFF any Favorites Lists
Disconnect the GPS device
Manually set the Zip Code of 90210 (Hollywood CA). The scanner should load frequencies appropriate to this area
Reconnect the GPS device. See if it turns off the Hollywood stuff and turns on stuff appropriate to your area.

Presuming the frequencies, etc., appropriate to your area are correctly loaded, you can try turning on any Favorites Lists and turn off scanning full database. If your scanner stills does not load the "correct stuff", my thoughts are that there is an issue with programming.

Generally I will accept the ranges that come with the full database, unless I'm increasing the range for a reason. (For example, a community about 40 miles away can be received at my home, but the database range is something like 20 miles.)

I know that you know this and just missed it :) There is no "full database" or pre-installed database on a 325/996, so not applicable.
FWOW - I know of no easy way to check, I can't remember if there is way to display coordinated with these. I have several, but just do not even attempt GPS on the non-DMA scanners.

Update Mark's manuals - link to GPS display

how are you programming the radio? ProScan, Freescan, Butel?
Have you gone through each system/site and checked the location/range? Some examples of what is not working would be good. Driving through a town, the local stuff should be on but if it is set for 10 mile radius is can shut off before the reception fails.
Setting up a scanner to be controlled by a GPS can be very involved if the RadioReference downloads don't work for your monitoring.

At first I didn't change any range settings just to see how many sites would work. Then I tried to make the range smaller then I was getting the same as you are reporting. Sites going off when I am still in range. I went back to the default range for each site. I may change the range by a few miles and see how that works. For my local area I do not make any range changes.

Unfortunately I did not read as good as I should have. You do not have a Zip Code entry scanner. I'm sorry.

But if you did, using some far away location would have activated frequencies for that location and not where you are. Uniden's late product manager, Paul Opitz used this very example long ago.
