You won't actually notice it doing anything unless you approach a state border (then you'll see it load the other state). All the lock/unlock is done pretty quietly and invisibly.

If you go to manually set your location in the menu, it defaults to the current location (how to see the current GPS location on the screen).

Now ok I understand that. But what do I need to set it to lock the neighboring counties if I wanted to locked out ?

AC0RV: As it stops on channels, departments, or systems you don't want to hear in the future, press CHAN then AVOID twice (or DEPARTMENT then AVOID twice or SYSTEM then AVOID twice).

You can also try setting your range to a lower value.

It would be nice if Uniden or 3rd party company would make a cable that plugs directly from your smartphone into your 436/536 to use for gps. Everybody has a smartphone nowadays and would make since without having to have additional cables, adapters etc.

Does your smartphone output NMEA? I don't think so. I don't know of any phones that "output" their location services via cable - some do via Bluetooth, but it's not NMEA

The app will be able to feed your location to the BCD536HP. Aside from that, there is no hardwire cable that could possibly be used to connect the scanner to a smartphone. Both are considered "Client" devices. To connect, one needs to be a host, the other a client (your PC is a host).

OK. So smartphone is a negative. Gonna have to break down and by the uniden gps thingy I guess.

Yeah the siren app will be a good thing so I can listen to my 536 at work.

I don't think it will. I'm looking at the 396XT cable and the end that plugs into the scanner is different than the USB cable that goes into the scanner.

After I posted the question, I realized I had used the cable in the wife that I had purchased with the uniden's gps unit and it was the cable that I have mentioned. It seemed to work for me..

Boy do I feel DUMB for asking the question!!

The android.location.GpsStatus.NmeaListener interface can do it. It's trivial to send the string over a serial connection (bluetooth or usb) I am using it to control a 396XT with good effect.
