I always get that "widget failed" message whenever I load gqrx, it doesn't seem to have any effect on performance afaik.

Choppy audio is often caused by a low sample rate, bad antenna reception or insufficient CPU resources. Whenever you start your dongle you should always begin by "tuning" it to an active stable signal such as NOAA or another known radio site with a good-quality consistent signal.
