The state has been interfacing gateways to local LMR systems down in South Georgia, its coming quick.

Yup. Getting new radio IDs with L3H S/Ns to replace MSI equipment from them everyday. They will still I/O with metro areas on most of our municipal TRS as they do today (and in metro ATL are strapped encrypted), the plan is to sunset the VHF when the LTE/LMR dual mode subscribers are in place.

The future of radio folks.

Is this SoCo system different from what DOT HERO units were using a few years ago when they demanded to go P25, saying the SoCo system threatened their lives?

The new XL series radios use both the LMR (Harris VIDA) 800 downtown site on 2 Peachtree and SoCo. They also bought some XLs that are LTE only. In 2019, they had a mish mash of XTS2500s on various trunked systems including our (though they saw little use).

Do you know if the new GSP SoCo/LMR solution will use the downtown VIDA core for their new radios as far as talkgroups and radio management?

MTS2000des would probably know more than most, but from what I heard GSP will not use the VIDA core to house the radio management, even though that would make logical sense considering the state is already invested into it, they may have ID's issued and access to TG's on the system.

They will be using SoCo CriticalLinc and although it is mcptt, im sure it's proprietary to SoCo, the same as BeOn to Harris, and smart connect to Moto.

I have heard stuff along the same line, it has been a fairly tight lipped deal, They weren't necessarily going to abandon the VHF, but they aren't going to maintain it after a year or two. They also plan to interface a gateway between the two, so in theory if the SoCo doesn't work the VHF will, and vise versa.

I was told no to BeON, strictly SoCo's MCPTT app running on the XL's, no multi-sim, essentially the same as what they are using on the sonim devices. (a lot of troopers have mentioned that in our region the SoCo service was terrible)

However I am glad to see a large agency stepping up and embracing new technology (considering Georgia can't afford to build out a statewide trunking network, and the 100+ conventional VHF repeaters throughout the state being a fiasco at best) and possibly abandoning a LMR system completely. This could be a large feather in the cap for SoCo, and could lead smaller agencies to follow suit. I have also heard rumors that AHP will be watching this closely.

Some of the Game Wardens already have the XL portables out in the wild (pun intended) as of a couple weeks ago.

Do you know what is going to happen to the VHF infrastructure? Curious how the state will use those towers in the future.
