Does anyone have the details regarding which HAM repeaters will be used for the NYC HAM radio volunteers assisting with marathon comms tomorrow?
Events such as this have been on-going for years and the Selected Repeaters generally have not changedDoes anyone have the details regarding which HAM repeaters will be used for the NYC HAM radio volunteers assisting with marathon comms tomorrow?
where they will get their next meal, what procedure they had at the recent doctors appointment, where they will eat when all else fails.Just out of curiosity: just what will Amateur radio operators going to talk about at the marathon?
if done the same as the Boston Marathon, much of the same traffic is passed, for redundancy and ensuring that if the Commercial system fails the network is functionalJust out of curiosity: just what will Amateur radio operators going to talk about at the marathon?
The entire marathon operations and administration is operating on the OneVoice network, with a ton of talk groups (and there isn't too much being talked about there)......

Sadly you are so misinformedwhere they will get their next meal, what procedure they had at the recent doctors appointment, where they will eat when all else fails.

I was waiting for someone from NY ham community involved in the marathon to comment, but I guess we have none here.
First off, marathons are huge events covering many square miles. They require a whole lot volunteers to ensure they come off successfully.
Put communications aside. The ham volunteers that show up are still bodies that are required. The bonus is that they're volunteers that bring their own radios. This is a definite advantage to the marathon organizers.
For example, here in Manitoba, the amateur community assists with communicators for the Manitoba Marathon. (It's an internationally accredited event). Hams provide communications for 17 aid stations, the lead and tail vehicles, roaming vehicles and a variety of check points. To do this requires around 30 radios.
Now from the organizer's point of view, consider the logistics of scaring up 30 odd extra commercial radios for the event, handing them out to non ham volunteers, making sure they know how to use them, when to use them, and what to say. And then making sure that all these radios come back in one piece.
Because ham volunteers come with their own radios, the step above isn't required.
Not only that, but the ham community has been aiding the Manitoba Marathon for over 40 years. It's fully integrated with the event. The organizers know that the ham volunteers come fully trained with experience gained from over four decades of service.
I can't speak for the NY Marathon, but I wouldn't be surprised if the amateur association with that event evolved in the same manner.
