Seems the FCC is a little slow. I passed the Technician test 3/17 and it's not posted yet.

Mike... someone said they are understaffed now that the sequestration stuff has happened lol

I too am a fan and graduate of HTO. I passed my Canadian Basic + Honours with a 94%. I will be signing up for their Canadian Advanced course once motorcycle season is over (winter 2013).

I'm becoming dissatisfied with HamTestOnline. Questions are popping up on material that has not been taught. For example, I've gotten questions on tower safety. I don't even know what a D-clip is because it was never mentioned.

The "Show Me" button in questions is showing things that I hadn't been taught. Is that how you're supposed to learn?

In my experience, yes. In other words, once you've shown the algorithm that you're competent in one area, it starts throwing new stuff at you.

Over time, as you answer correctly, you stop seeing that question and it moves on to new material.

To better understand, read this:

http://www.hamradiolicenseexam.com/study-tips.htm

I used Hamtest for both my Tech and General. I passed both the first time out. I aced the Tech, although I didn't ask how many I got right for the General.

I suggest you read all of the explanations that you can click on at the bottom of the intro page, if you don't understand how it works:

http://www.hamradiolicenseexam.com/

Scroll all the way down and they cover every aspect of their website.

Good luck and welcome to the hobby!

Or welcome back. I had a Novice license back in the early 80's. Then I determined that learning about computers would improve my chances of a career more than learning about amateur radio. Well, I was right!

And now you can combine the two!

Welcome back!

Well d-clips have been used for many years by mountain climbers. you just push them against the tower and there attached.
while i have not used ham test online i hear good things about it. think positive and all will work out for you.

Surprisingly I have not done any mountain climbing so I don't know which side of the D-clip should be facing the tower. I'm sure if I had even seen a D-clip I would know but HamTestOnline didn't bother to show me one before testing me on them. This was one of those cases where you just memorize the answer and don't really learn anything.

Okay scratch the mountain climbing thing. Fire fighters on a rescue mission descending down the side of a very big hill (mountain) to rescue a life dog ,cat, person. the thing you see them clip on their belt is a D-CLIP only one side moves it is on a spring. you can buy aluminum ones at Wal-mart. i use them to fasten my dog and quickly un clip when i need to go. i hope this explains the D-CLIP.

You're missing the point.

I paid HamTestOnline to teach me this material. Since it doesn't teach all the material, it's requiring me to learn it from other sources. Therefore it's incomplete.

There are always links in each section to learn. Click on them.

If you learn how to use Hamtest, you will pass, there is no question of that in my mind. I am no whiz kid and I passed both Tech and General.

Did I learn everything and retain everything and am I now an electronics wizard? No.

However, I would not have remembered all of the material anyway. I was never a good student, but if I had Hamtest type of tools available when I was in school, I would have done much better, believe me.

Augment your Hamtest material with the ARRL Handbook, as has been mentioned and refer to it often. Every ham should have the latest Handbook and the ARRL Operating manual as well, anyway.

All I can say is that if you understand how to use Hamtest Online properly, you will get your ticket.

I cannot make it any clearer than that.

They are links to Wikipedia which is free. The topic of "Tower Safety" had no link. I now know how to orient my d-clip to safely climb a tower yet I don't know what one looks like.

There are many other ways to pass the exams.

The question is "Do you want to pay money for something that only gives you half the information you'll need and expects you to find the rest of the information on your own?" The creator of HamTestOnline was saying that it is intended to teach the concepts instead of just throwing questions at you but that's not the case for a lot of the material. In many cases you simply memorize the correct answer to the question and continue.

To the OP:

HTO has a money back guarantee. If you aren't satisfied, get your money back and try something else.

End of story.

i bought a subscription 3 days ago. studied about 7 hours total now... up to 75% of their study manual.

I took a pre-test just to see how miserably id fail when I first signed up. Failed... with a 23% score.

3 days into studying, took 2 random pool question technician practice tests tonight, passed with 76% and 82%.

I am taking my tech exam this saturday morning and hope to pass it.

I may even give the general a go while im there. i feel confident. I should be a real ham soon!

just a quick follow up... I spend probably 10 hours of on and off training over the last week, at work, at home, with distractions at both places, and passed today with a 97% score. This site works! I am definitely buying the next element of the test.
