Dave, you will not be disappointed! I’ve owned many, many different radios in my life and would highly recommend the R30 to anyone.

Add a few feet of wire to antenna and does very well on HF. CW reception is great. I agree with tumegpc about audio quality, which is fantastic. I was hoping this radio would be good, and its better than good, its great. Picks up distant NXDN with portable antenna that my SDS-100 doesn't know exists. P25 audio is great. Has narrow AM mode which makes MW listening and DXing far superior to IC-R20. Icom got this one right. Now just waiting for some software. CS-R30 been on HRO website for almost a month but they still have not received it.
You are so right about NXDN. I did an Auto Memory Write Scan for NXDN-VN a couple days ago and recorded 11 channels in 1 hour.
Hi tumegpc: this sounds interesting are you saying it's possible to set a specific digital decode mode for the Auto Memory Write Scan? ie can I set up a VFO Scan that will search across an entire band (say 145-500Mhz) that will ONLY pick out those with NXDN-VN mode, and then using Auto Memory Write Scan, write only the NXDN-VN channels to the 200 available memory positions?
Do you know if only one mode is possible - ie could I use the above method to pick out both NXDN-N and NXDN-VN, but ignore FM mode channels for example?
Hello,Greetings,
I'm really impressed with the limited reviews so far. I cannot find any dialog about if the R30 is or can be computer controlled? I'm really on the fence in purchasing the R30.
Thanks in advance
Those show on screen while receiving. If you record those transmissions the values show on screen as you scroll through the list of recordings. Can anyone confirm when receiving a NXDN transmission, is it possible to see live on the screen the Callers ID (ie the UID) and the Called ID (ie the UID of the recipient or the Group ID GID)? I note both of these are listed as stored in the Rx History Log, but that appears to be limited to just a rolling buffer of 50 most recent hits. TIA.
Hello,
CI-V is supported through USB and the speaker/remote jack. The information in the Advanced Manual is not in the document outline on the left, but it is on page 7-29 (after the cloning information).

BP-293 "3 AA Battery Case" (option)
Yes, the IC-R30 can be powered with 3-AA alkaline batteries just as it was with the IC-R20. However the BP-293 is an extra cost option. Also it does make the receiver a bit more chubby / heavier and the LC-189 case cannot be used with the battery case attached. The battery level indicator does not operate with alkaline cells (just shows a "filled in" icon). As they indicate on the shell of the BP-293, the use of Ni-Cad or Ni-Mh rechargeable batteries are STRONGLY NOT to be used. It lacks any short circuit protection.
I just pulled the trigger on a R30 from HRO to supplement my BCD436HP & PSR-800. I'm super excited as it will be my first wideband handheld since selling my Alinco DJ-X2000T a few years ago. I plan on using it for discovery & monitoring civil & MIL air.
I also ordered the 3-AA battery holder but just read N9EWO's review and he states:
I ordered it to use Eneloops as backups. Anyone have any experience or thoughts?
You are going to love the R30. The AA Battery case on the R20 made it so convenient when I would go out of town. There was a little size & weight added but nothing too extreme.
Thanks, I can't wait to get it... I'm trying to understand the warning about using rechargeable NiMH batteries in the 3-AA holder..
