Burnsy how about getting a 9v cigaret adapter for use from the 12v out let splice the wire from the adapter and run it anywhere you want that way, you can take it out and use it any other vehicle.roll it up and put the adapter out of site....

12 volt to 1.5, 3, 4.5, 6, 7.5, 9 volt switching DC/DC converters with 2 amp output car adapter.
Here is a voltage regulated 1.5 to 12 voltage converter. Look for something like this that you can hard wire into your car. Just make sure that it is regulated so that you don't suffer from power surges when starting your car or your alternator acts up.
You could simply use the regulator in this picture. Simply remove the cigarette lighter adapter and correctly wire the regulator to the power leads. Make sure that you fuse the regulator also.

Many car stereo shops will install these for $50 dollars if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself.

I should be able to do it just fine. So I'd have to get that, and then cut the wire that go into the cig adapter on that unit, and take those to a fuse, right?

Yes and make sure the polarity is correct Positive (+) to positive terminal and negative (-) to ground terminal or you could fry the regulator.
