Any form of "racing" or "shooting" ear defenders won't comply with the OP request
Must allow hearing ambient sounds around me.
.

I use a quite old now Akai sit-on-the-ear headphones for HF listening and they are very good - modify the plug for mono of course. I had to add a small capacitor in series to keep the mains hum out.

I tried earbuds with my little Yaesu VX2 in my pocket but they became very tiring after a while as there was a big "thump' as the squelch lifted - a cheap pair of headphones like the Radio Shack ones worked much better.

I have been shopping for some good quality headphones for use with my iPod as I can't comfortably wear ear buds. Quite by accident this week, I found some barely used Polaroid PHP adjustable earphones at a garage sale for $2 . The cord is cloth covered so there is no annoying tangling. They actually sound good for music, and these will be my reference while shopping for high end earphones. These can be had on amazon for about $19 or less. They are not a full muff style, lightweight and probably can still hear loud sounds if needed. When I get some high end audiophile headphones, these will become my "cans" for the radio shack.

I think Southern Telecomm is the OEM for Poloroid headphones.

I've got a mono pair that I bought at Radio Shack a number of years ago. The only problem is the foam-like substance on them has begun to tear. Having headphones is the way to go if you are out in an arena or other location where crowd noise makes it hard to hear and you are listening to - or trying to find - the frequencies for security or other goings-on in those places. I would be interested in find a pair for mono listening that are somewhat inexpensive.

Honestly, I think mostly any headphone will provide a noticeable improvement in scanner audio. The major advantage over speakers is that all the audio will be focused in your ears, therefore enhancing intelligibility. While I tend not to use headphones on my scanners, I do have external speakers connected to my 536, 996xt, and PRO-163 for improved audio. I also use ProScan with my 536 and can pipe the audio through my computer speakers. That option allows me to greatly improve the audio through the various adjustments available with the soundcard.

I ended up buying MFJ-302B headphones for only $29.95! I actually bought them for SWL and not scanner listening. I figured at that price how could I go wrong. They fit my big head with ease and room to spare! Very comfortable and they sound great.

All of this is causing me to thing some of the least expensive headphones might be the best choice. But a lot of them, like the typical race-track headphones are very big, heavy and bulky. All of which I'm trying to avoid. I actually used to like the $10.00 ones Radio Shack used to sell. How many of you remember these?

I had several pairs of those when working in my work place office. Had a problem with the mice eating the ear cups.
