Hey y'all ..

I've been lurking on this board for sometime.
I've been doing some shortwave listening for a few months and am considering getting a scanner.

I live in Frankfort, Ky.
Not wanting to spend a lot of money, I was considering getting a used scanner off ebay.
Perhaps something like a radio shack PRO-74.

I am most interested in listening to the Frankfort Police/Fire, NOAA weather, SKYWARN, and maybe some
rail traffic.

I know this question gets asked all the time, and thank you for your patience with a newbie.
In looking at the database on this site, am I correct in thinking that an older Rat-shack PRO-75
would pick up the traffic in this area?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi PassiveListener , welcome to the board..... The PRO-74 or PRO-75 will monitor Frankfort, but you might be happier with a newer model scanner. One that will decode PL/DPL is almost a must any more to reduce reception of transmissions from other agencies on the same or nearby freqs... You won't need a trunker to monitor Frankfort, but Lexington, Louisville and Scott County all have trunked systems that might be of interest... And, as freqs , pointed out, you'll need a digital capable scanner to monitor KSP.

PL and DPL are subaudible tones that allows more than one agency to use the same freq with less interference.... there are articles in the rr.com wiki that explain the concept in more detail.... PL is explained in the Continuous Tone Coded Squelch System article.... DPL(DCS) is explained in the article about Digital Code Squelch... The feature should be listed in the specifications for the scanner....
