Hey everyone, I'm a newbie to the RR forums here, but I use the site all the time. I need some serious help ID'ing a frequency that alot of us are hearing here in Western North Carolina. It's a county fire frequency from somewhere that we're hearing over Yancey County, NC's dispatch frequency, 155.085. They call their dispatch "South Fire" and so far, I've heard "Engine 33, Squad 35, Truck 37, Ladder 33, Engine 35, Engine 1719, Engine 1701, Engine 1704, Chief 35, and Chief 17" lighting up the frequency. Though the "3" units were dispatched to a fire, I heard 1700 units also. Not sure who it is. Here's a sample dispatch from them:

"Ladder 33, Squad 35, Engine 33, Engine 35, Truck 37, Structure Fire, 3345 Greenbrier (repeat dispatch) South Fire clear at 00:30"

Can anyone help me ID who we're hearing, because it's definitely not anyone local!

Columbus (Jefferson County) is in the northern portion of Alabama.

Mexia and Seminole are in the southern end of the state.

The City of Warrior, in Jefferson County, is licensed for 155.085, which they use as a police channel (according to Radio Reference).

Andrew -

If the following is correct:

1 - the unidentified fire agency is being heard being rebroadcast by the Yancey fire rptr
2 - they're being heard over the main Yancey repeater (there are 3)
3 - you're hearing both the dispatcher and vehicles for the unid agency

than the agency you're hearing is likely Santa Rosa County, Florida's south fire channel.

Santa Rosa runs their "south" channel on 158.925 / 173.8, which is the input to the main Yancey fire repeater. Santa Rosa has its "north" fire channel on 155.235 / 192.8 .

Santa Rosa County is located just east of Pensacola, on the Florida panhandle. When we get a weather front that moves west-to-east across Georgia and North Carolina, ducting often occurs that will allow you to hear comms out of Florida via rebroadcasting by local repeaters.

Cleveland County Fire will sometimes rebroadcast Flagler County (east coast of Fla) Fire and Rescue, for instance. Avery County Fire used to rebroacast one of the Highlands County (central Fla) fire dispatch channels.

The USCG Auxilliary repeater at Lake Hickory used to repeat the channel 16 and 21 Coast Guard messages from the Mobile, Ala station when the ducting was good.

At this point, to confirm that you are hearing Santa Rosa County, the easiest way might be to continue collecting fire call locations, and comparing them to an actual map / mapping program for the county.

If the ducting were really strong, and you were listening in a high location, you might hear Santa Rosa direct on 158.925 / 173.8 . Keep in mind, though, that the Yancey repeater has a BIG advantage over you with regards to antenna height, and receiver quality.

If you have the ability, you also want to monitor unknown signals for their PL / DPL. Knowing both the frequency AND tone, and whether the signal is being heard via another agency's repeater, make identifying the unknown agency much easier.

Just when I thought I'd never hear this mystery frequency again, it popped up while I was getting ready for Church this morning. "Squad 35" had a call at 3387 Grove Ridge Parkway. And its somewhere further west than here, because their time of dispatch was 08:50 and it was 09:50 here in Western NC. They call their dispatch center "South Fire", it's drivin me crazy, I gotta figure out who I am hearing! Thanks for your help everyone, you're the best!

Having served at Hurlburt Field Ft Walton Beach Florida, which is part of Okaloosa County, I know for a fact that Pensacola and Ft Walton Beach are in the Central Time zone.

edit: just noticed this thread is from January 2007... better late than never.
